What are the all-weather riders going to be using between now and March?

I ride all year and got caught out in a couple of inches of snow on Conti Trail Attacks last year. The snow hung around for a couple of weeks and made for very unpleasant riding for a around a mile every day until I got to a treated road.

I have bought some extra wheels so I can keep my current tyres for summer and buy a dedicated set for the next 3 months.

I do not ride off-road and all my riding is on tar (either wet, dry or snow-covered) so I need a set that will work well in the snow but still work on wet tarmac.

Searching the net there seems to be a choice between going to knobblies(?) or Adventure style tyres?

What do people recommend?

Thanks

Alex

No tyres are going to work unless its soft snow where the usually knoblies would work. As soon as it gets packed you need studs but studs are a death trap as soon as your on a cleared road. Not even sure if they are legal on a cleared road.

This thread got me thinking: When i was a young lad back in the 60s I only had a motorbike to get around on - regardless of whether it had snowed or was icy.
When icy or snowbound you basically just went slowly with your feet down acting as stabilisers. I can remember doing a 10 to 15 mile commute regularly using this method without incident. The question of what tyres didn't arise - tyres were tyres in those days! (And electrically heated grips, gloves, kit was a distant dream).
Happy days.

Not so much a recommendation as I've never tried them but I'm interested to find out how well Heidenau's M+S compound on their K60 Scout M+S tyres works in winter conditions.

If I were in your position, I'd certainly be considering them.

I've got these on my spare wheels and put them on for last winter. Obviously they don't work when the snow is compressed but the do allow some use on the slushy stuff but, you have to be careful: It's not a license to go MotorCross

They do work quite well down the lanes as well.
