I'm back to biking where most of my past riding was done in sunny Singapore. I'm in Dorset where I usually stick winter tyres on my car around now to deal with all the water and other crap on the roads. Does the same apply to a bike needing 'winter' tyres or for a GS is it a case of getting a set of knobblies?

If you ride mainly on the road and particularly in the winter, don't put knobblys on your bike. Any of the 90/10 or full blown road tyre is what you want on winter tarmac.

Heidenau do tyres in an M+S compound with the snowflake and mountain symbol on them, in GS sizes. They should, in theory, continue to offer a good level of grip when the ambient temperature gets down to 7 deg C and lower.

I've been riding for 36 years and in the last four gone back to riding full time (no car) and can honestly say that up here in the artic conditions of South Wiltshire there is no need for winter tyres, adjust your riding to suit the conditions. Maybe if you are in Scotland there maybe a need, but Darset, surely not

Hi...it's not so much the snow but the surface water and mud/stones etc that eek out of the fields, tractors etc

You could look at a blocky road tyre like the original Tourance (if you can still find them), the new Avon or Conti TKC70 which would be ok in the summer too.

Tourance next is a brilliant rain tyre but like all metzlers, imho they square off to quickly
