Hi, wonder if you can help. My work Laptop, for security reasons, doesn't have wifi and needs to be hardwired into my broadband via the usual RJ45 lead. However, this lead is routed under the carpet to my lads bedroom and his XBox. The only way I can use my laptop is to park it on the game consol. Which annoys the boy :blagblah

Anyway, a mate was telling me about a wifi received (router repeater? thing?) that I can place in my office / lounge which receives my wifi signal and outputs through the rj45 lead into my laptop.

Anybody know what this device is - which is the best one and how much?

Thanks

Only 1 outlet on your router? If so just use a wired switch as anything WiFi defeats the security requirement.

Would a usb wifi dongle not work?

Or one of those express-port (previously PCMCIA I think)

Most routers have more than one wired port, can't you plug another network cable fom it to your laptop?
Is your laptop's wifi disabled to stop you connecting it to a network outside your office?

i get the impression the router is not conveniently located for hard wiring.

a newish apple airport express will do what the OP wants. older ones look the same, but won't.

Correct - the router is in my daughters bedroom - last seen a couple of years ago before it got covered discarded clothes, chox boxes, pizza bits and dvd's/books :blast

Thanks for the tips :thumb2

Google Devolo.

Effectively wired range estenders that came with my new PVR so it can play iPlayer on the telly. You can plug it into the socket nearest your laptop/desk and voila - works well. :thumb2
