Just for info really. I have a netgear DG834V2. I think that model is the most commonly used. I had a problem that the wireless kept dropping and eventually i had to do a /release /renew as the IP got screwed. I upgraded the firmware from 1.05.00 to the latest 3.01.25 and hey presto no more dropouts.

Hopefully it will help someone

Cheers

Is that a newly released version of the firmware?

Someone at work has been battling with this, netgear replaced a couple of times too.

Don't know how new it is but i have now been connected over a day now and i am still connected

And me!!!!

I have the same problem with my netgear (DG834PN) where it drops the connection or sometimes the speed drops to 24 Mbps or even 1Mbps but still says signal strength is excellent.

I also recently upgraded the firmware which is new but it doesnt seem to have made any different.

Furthermore, a couple of times recently the Internet connection has dropped on hard wired PCs on the network and only comes back when I reboot the router

My original suspect was a bandwidth problem but it happens when all the other network PCs are off? Next step will probably be looking at the IP leasing but I am nervous about that, since the system is still working - just.

I dont know if this helps but its quite easy to give the computers their own IP addresses which will allow a faster connection to the router or switch rather than windows allocating an address on start up. It also helps with fault finding because it takes windows out of the loop.

If your machines are kept in the house and you dont go mobile with any of them assign the IP addresses yourself. You can still do it if your moblie with a laptop but if you want to pick up a network somewhere else then undo the following

so. If your router address is 192.168.1.1 (the address you log in to the router with )

right click your network connection, not the 1394 connection (wired or wireless) and go to properties. Hightlight TCP/IP and go properties again
check the box "use following IP address"

In IP address type 192.168.1.220
in submet 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1 (or whatever you use to log into the router)

check the "use the following DNS server"

in preferred type 192.168.1.1 (or whatever you use to log into the router)

alternate. leave blank

click apply
for every other computer on your network do the same thing changing the IP address so

machine 1 192.168.1.220
machine 2 192.168.1.219
machine 3 192.168.1.218
reducing the last digit by one each time.

I must be bored to post that lot but it may help with the odd connection problem. I hope im not doing an egg sucking job

:)

Thanks Redcastle, I'll give the address thing a go during the week................
