Hi, I have just switched to Virgin cable broadband and bought a belkin wireless router which has been set up on my laptop with a wired connection. When the cable is removed the laptop (has wireless facility) says there is limited connection. This seems to be due to it being protected, if it is disconnected and connected the password seems to be accepted but when logged on it offers excellent connection but limited use and will not allow me access. My other 2 computers around the house are able to log-on and work? Am i not doing something obvious or is it something to do with the set-up? Any hints gladly accepted. Thanks Dave

Have you checked that the router is set up to allow internet connection of the IP address for the wireless laptop? Have you checked that the router and the laptop share the same channel for wireless.
What firewall program are you running on the laptop if any, have you told it that the ip wireless/router ip is safe to use

Is there a switch on your laptop for wireless communication, and have you turned it on ?

Have you enabled wireless security with either WPA or WEP (preferable the former) and if so, have you entered the password onto your laptop ?

Hi Chaps,
Thanks for the replies. I have been away from a computer for a while.
The laptop is wireless enabled. It finds the signal and connects, it says invalid IP in the top connection box when it refuses to log on to the signal. When disconnected / connected it does not change and it does not give the chance to enter the password. Any help on how to enter this. As you might guess not a computer expert. Thanks Dave

Go into 'Show all connections', highlight the laptop's wireless connection and right click to get 'properties'. Select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click 'Properties' box, in the box resulting, ensure that 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server automatically' are selected, save and exit.
It may be helpful to reboot at this stage and see if it now works ok. :)

Plus if you're using the Belkin connection software, try disabling it and using the windows (XP presumably?) wizard for it.....I've had probs with the Belkin prog trying to be to clever from time to time :)
