I have a netgear wireless router.

It's not very well. I keep losing my internet connection.
The signal strength is very low, when it used to be very strong.

None of the units have been moved, everything is the same as it was.

When i lose the connection, if i twiddle the aerial on the "wireless box" it re-connects.

Will a new box just plug in, or will it need all the "song and dance" that the very very nice man :judge needed when it was installed .

Or shall i just replace the tiddly aerial, that's if it's possible to buy just the aerial . :nenau

You can get the aerial seperately. I would imagine it would be a song and dance routine to configure a new router, same as last time.

Mine does this every so often and then seems to sort itself out after a couple of days. Never found out why.

If the cable to the fax and telephone gets anywhere near the router cable, it causes problems.

Best is to go to the admin screen of the netgear box. Use any computer browser, access either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (depends on the type of netgear)

If the password/id hasn't been changed, id=Admin password=password

You should be able to see Router Stats on your left. That gives you an idea if the problem comes from your box or from the connection.

If you've got to replace the box, write down all parameters (do screen prints). Usually installations are not complex, and 90% of people don't need to add anything except the WiFi security.

Other thing you can do is contact Netgear, and they will tell you to setup a special command in the box which allows them to take a look inside remotely...

Yes it has - the 'office' has had a change around and now the signal has to go through a thick wall and not out one door into another. :rob

If fiddling with the aerial helps - check it is pushed fully home into the back of the router.

Other than that get that very nice man :judge to sing to it when he brings his bike back :augie

Is it one of the DG834 variants? I get connection problems with mine periodically - every six months or so. Bizarrely, I found that upgrading the firmware to the latest version seems to cure it. Doesn't seem make much sense but might be worth a try.

Strangely enough it is DG834G - and funnily enough I was going to suggest to do just that as I've done it before on these and whether snake oil or otherwise it has seemed to have helped :nenau Curiously I wonder whether the great Go Do One Meister fancies having a go or whether he wants to phone a friend? ;)

OK - here's some destructions - nice to be able to offer advice Neil rather than the other way round!

1) Check what version DG834G you have, on the bottom of the unit it'll say v2, v3 etc.

2) Go here and download the relevant firmware for your unit

*edit* 2B) Unzip the file you download.

3) Open a new tab in your brower and type in http://192.168.0.1

4) Unless you've changed it, your username will be Admin, password = password

5) Scroll down on the left hand side and click on "router upgrade"

6) click "choose" then navigate to the file you downloaded on your desktop, click "upload" and follow the instructions.

7) Bingo! This may or may not solve the connection problems.

I have a linksys router and mine can be a very low signal one minute and the next time on the lappy an excellent signal:blast

I'd recommend doing this too...but....connect the LAN/ethernet cable to do the actual upgrade....sometimes if you rely on USB or wireless it can bomb out.

It's the weather, seriously.

Low air pressure and it all works fine.

High air pressure and it yurns to rat-shit.

Could also be someone else on a close channel next door, or wireless telly repeaters interfering with it.
