could be a few things for a start check that your router/firewall or access point has tcp port 443 open (standard https needs this)

what make and model is your new hardware ?

Sorry should have said that I am not very IT literate. Hardware is Belkin F5D7632 ADSL modem with wireless G router, with a belkin F5D7010 pc card. I am using an IBM laptop, but the problem is also on my base station. Any advice welcome

doing a quick search has not brought up anything conclusive found two things tho

1. folk have had similar problems using aol, it worked fine with the aol browser but not internet explorer or any other browser - which one or you using ?

2. the second is an issue with the belkin device and increasing the MTU seems to solve it - here is the link

(2) its not difficult to change have a look at your userguide it may have something in there

if i come across anything else will post

Thanks unshift I am using the aol browser but with IE I still have the same problem. I will have a look at the link and see what I can do :)

 Unshift Thanks for your help I have now changed the modem / router for a netgear one and was online within 10 mins. Once again thanks for the help.

Haha. Good job I read all of the posts. I was just about to say ditch the Belkin.

My brother recently asked me about getting a wireless modem/router. He has 3 devices (a pc, laptop & an i-summat). All have integral OEM wireless adapters of unknown origin. My advice was to buy a 3Com, Linksys or Netgear router. In my experience these 3 makes work with all other stuff e.g. PCs, PS2 & Apples.

Hvae a BT Voyager 2100 myself. Has worked flawlessly from day one with all kinds of WiFi cards and cable connections. none of the problems that keep appearing here.

Slightly different track. But just bought a BT Voyager 205 from ebay for my son so that he can plug in his Pc and Xbox at Uni. Takes a USB connection and an ethernet connection (No Wirless). Just what he needed. Shame BT don't sell them any more - but that's what e-bay is for.
