wiring for a quest????????

does anyone know how to wire up the powered cradle for the quest?
it has four wires
red
black
white
brown

am i right in thinking that red is live,,black is earth, and i can ignore the other two

any advice very welcome

Have just dug out the fitting instructions for my Quest cradle (the Garmin version, not the RAM QPAQ) and you are correct. The white and brown wires are for the audio feed but are disconnected below the split for the audio jack. I assume that this is a 2nd hand cradle, if so does it have the in-line fuse?

If you want me to scan the fitting instructions for you let me know.

yes is second hand and garmin. no inline fuse but will fit one.
i guess the wiring is straight forward but do you know what rating fuse to fit

It's a 1.5 amp fuse.

Re. Audio, some don't bother but it's a great aid in so much as you don't have to keep one eye on the GPS as the audio alerts provide instructions and if these aren't descriptive enough a glance at the screen confirms them. One warning though, the Garmin routing will sometimes not instruct you of a turning off of a road onto a road of a lesser category if the turning is on a bend and is effectively straight ahead with the road you are on turning sharp left or right.

Dunno if you have an intercom? If not, and you only want to listen to your GPS, then you can set-up decent direct audio for about £15 for the bits from Maplin inc. postage. It took me about an hour to build into my Arai complete with wiring, jacks etc. The small mylar speakers are located behind the fabric lining and aligned perfectly with my lug holes. I recessed them into the polystyrene inner slightly and hot melt glued them in place, you can't tell they're there either by looks or contact with my ears with the helmet on. Works well up to about 80 with decent ear plugs in, any faster and I can still hear something that prompts me to look at the screen. This set-up plugs directly into the Quest cradle trailing audio lead.

Prior to the above I tried in ear headphones but there was too much noise. Then an over the ear single ear piece (like the police use) that meant I could wear ear plugs but it was uncomfortable, especially when putting on and removing my lid. In putting my helmet on it frequently disturbed the position of the ear piece as well meaning that it wasn't lined up with my ear properly and thus the ability to hear instructions diminished.

looks like ive found the thread I need
got my 2nd quest today so small, cool little bit of kit.
came with the original garmin bike mount, so ive got a trailing 3.5mm jacl socket, then the lead has been cut short, red and black wires for the 12v but what does one do with the white and brown wires.
do doubt I will ignore them but does anybody know what they are actually for..

South of the split for the female audio jack they're redundant. Between the split and the cradle they carry the audio. I just insulated the ends for good measure and forgot about them. I can only assume that the way that the cable is made makes it cheaper for Garmin to do it in this fashion.

Zach,im in Kingswinford, not far from you. I took my feed from one of the dash lights, that way only takes power from bike when ignition is on... i have a picture somewhere i'll post for you.
