Having bought a 390LM just last year I'm not prepared to splash out another £500+ to get the nav 5 on my new GS, so can anyone tell me how I can hard wire my 390, preferably in to where the nav 5 prep is already plugged in to.

I assume (always dangerous) that the prep (ie the power loom) for the Nav 5, plugs into a socket somewhere up the front of the bike?

If so, find the socket and use it as a power source for whatever navigation device you wish to power. Suitable leads available from Nippy Norman (some folk despise him) or your local friendly BMW dealer.

Failing that, run a fused power lead back to the battery and power from there or, if you want it switched, power it from a switched power supply; the rear light is a popular choice. Oodles of threads on this site how to do it.

Failing the above, explain a bit better what you are trying to achieve, please.

Great. You've maybe now got the answer; I guess you'll need to exchange the cradle, too.

Yes, it should be as simple as that. If not, chose alternatives in post #3.

personally i'd sell the 390 and pick up a 660, it will fit right in to the existing mount, i'd be worried you will devalue your bike mucking about with what is a good selling point.
you will sell the 390 no worries on here.

You Can buy a socket that fits oem bmw gps socket. Nippi normans sell Them. I just fittet my tomtom rider 400 on my bike, this Way.

Thread moved from the GPS section into the WC section, as it's a 'new GS'. Hopefully that means a WC; if so bods here might have some useful hints and tips for the fellow.

Hi,

I had a similar dilemma, but with a Garmin 60CSX. I bought the same plug, but from BMW in Oz and wired it in. The plug connects the OEM GPS Prep power wire and will power the GPS with the Key on/off. I leave it on the bike tucked away under the beak. I did put a rubber plug over the GPS power plug part to stop dust and water getting into the connection.

Have a look at this post, good installation details:

BMW OEM Part Number: 80000611656

The power-plug on the bike is on the right hand side.

Cheers,

Pete

I use the 390 in my other bike as well.
Can I just check , you do know your going to have to
a. remove the factory fitted mount and associated wiring.
b. source a second bike mount for your 390.
c. wire up via canbus or direct to battery.

surely it would be simpler to get a 660 and use the mount already on your gs and the 660 mount on your other bike.:nenau

just trying to help:)

A) I know
B) I already have a second cradle
C) £12 for wire to plug in to the loom.

For all I use a sat nav, against £600 for a nav 5 or buying a 660, I'm happy to go with my 390.

So you should be, a 660 works fine but now is not the time to be spending money on such an old unit. Unless you think you need all the fripperies that the Nav V offers the 390 will do all you need
