Gents a question
Just had an MOT and it failed as the handle bars are "wobbly", there is movement from the yoke, the mechanic tried to tighten up the main centre nut but to no avail, he says it is the bearing and that it needs replacing, is this the case?
your comments would be appreciated

...another possible solution is rebalancing the front tire.
I had boughten a 1995 GS that had a bad wobble, and after a rebalance of the front tire/wheel,problem was gone..
Maybe worth a shot??? good luck Rich

...in fact the bike in my avatar is the one I'm talking about.

Its probably wear in the upper ball joint. Not uncommon, shouldn't be too difficult to replace.:nenau

Thanks for the reply, the Movement/wobble is when the bike is static, I noticed it when I move the bike to put it in the garage at night. the handle bars seem to pivot on the centre nut, will changing the bearing on the top yoke nut solve the problem. As when the mechanic tried to tighten it up there was no movement, even after he undid it and tried to do it back up, there seemed to be a gap between the yoke and the underside of the screw/bolt like there should be a washer there?

I've had exactly that happen over the weekend. I lent on the bars to check the map for a 250 mile trip home and it went clonk!
It felt very unsure tipping into corners, had play across the bars and sometimes felt notchy.

I took the bearing out and have ordered another. The bearing isn't about to fall apart and leave you holding a set of bars waggling in the breeze, but is definitely worn out and has some roughness.

While it's out I tried to check for play in the lower ball joint and could find none so I'll see what it feels like with the new bearing in.

handle bars

hi guys, i have just changed my head bearing today for the same fault, bearing only cost £15 and now the play has gone.

Well I've put the new bearing in and it's smooth now but I can still wobble the bars slightly. I'm guessing that this is normal as there doesn't seem any other play just the leverage of the bars or my huge biceps.

So, I'll forget it and just ride it. :)

Mine has just developed this issue would like to replace the bearing.

Anybody got an idiots guide to do this or can point me in the right direction...

Many thanks...
