Hi all,

Advice sought: noticed when washing bike yesterday )obviously not often enough) that the rear wheel on the bike was wobbly. Its not the wheel loose but the carrier. I haven't noticed this before so its come on quite quickly. It moves about 1mm at the hub edge which translates to 3mm or so at the rim. Worrying enough not to ride it!!

I haven't had time to investigate - Is this likely to be terminal in the bevel or a bearings/shimming affair? Reading through the manual this looks like a specialized jobs with BMW tools?

Advice greatly appreciated.

cheers

-Pete

Thanks steveo: having read your thread i think I'll strip it down and see if there is anything obviously amiss - let face it I can't make it worse and if I need to send it off for a rebuild then I haven't lost anything.

About 2 weeks ago I got a huge scary weave on the bike at about 95 whilst doing a quick power run. it has never happened before so i presume this may be the culprit - in which case I don't want to ride it again until sorted. To me, a wobbly wheel means - don't ride it till fixed!

If you can't sort it speak to Steve at SED (01529-300434) he will advise you or sort it if necessary, sounds like a bearing change to me!

I was thinking bearings too, and I wouldn't chance riding a bike with dodgy bearings in wheel. I guess that there is always possibility of bearings locking, not worth the risk.

hmmmm....... agreed. pete have you tried removing the wheel and then trying to detect movement.........buggerd if i could ?

Easy to do them Pete :thumb2

I was talking to someone the other day who had their bearing crack round the middle.

wobbly wheel gs

When I had my GS there was slight play in back wheel, according to manual there should be as play taken up as bike (warms up) just depends on how much play! Chris

You say that the carrier is loose? I had an issue in 2007, where there were a batch of badly machined carriers, such that it makes the wheel look wobbly, without any bearing play. There is nothing actually loose in that scenario. See if your calliper moves at the same time. Just a thought :D
An old wobbly wheel thread which may/may not be relevant to your case
