Yep, mine's failed. Riding along and thought, "Hmm, the M1's bumpier than usual this evening" and then realised it probably wasn't the motorway surface :blast

Pulled onto the hard shoulder and sure enough there was blobs of grease on the brake disc and the rim. Thought I could either wait for my mate/the RAC to recover me or just limp it off at the next junction and over to my mate's workshop. Opted for the limp it option - rather peculiar riding along with a wobbly rear wheel!

Waiting on a bearing from James Sherlock now.

So, 31,500 miles - is that good or bad going for a 1200 final drive failure?

Erm, must be pretty good cos I'm on my 4th at 32k :D

Sherlock's is probably cheaper, but it may be worth knowing that main dealers charge £33-£34 for the bearing.

Ah, cheers. I wasn't aware that I could get the bearing individually from BMW. When you ring them they sound surprised that you're not just replacing the whole unit! I guess they're not the ones paying for them!

Will see if I can find the part no. in the online Fiche. The RepROM's useless - just has instructions on how to replace the unit as far as I can see

So can you get away with just changing a bearing?

reading all the threads on here, including PATZX12 excellent write up it seems that you have to do pinion gear bearing crown wheel shimming and backlash etc.

I would be interested to see the repair you do,any pics etc:thumb2

Everything seems fine expect for the bearing, so I'm just simply repairing rather than completely reconditioning. If you reconditioned then I would assume you'd need to do the whole lot, yes. I of course know next to little about final drives, but it's in the hands of a good mate whom I trust with these things.

Hi. Thanks for the part numbers and prices! Noted down for future reference - have a feeling they will come in VERY handy.

Apparently getting my roller bearing out of the housing was quite a challenge - might have something to do with me riding the bike a good few miles to the workshop after it failed - whoops! I've never been one to wait for a recovery truck (Yeah, yeah I know - I bought the wrong bike! :P:D)

Must say i am a lot happier now knowing i am not the only one which had lots of final drives going.
Also had a 06 GSA and my final drive went evry 13000miles.Had it 3 times replaced by BMW and only the last time did i have had to pay for a re-furb.Cost me £350.
Now have traded my 06 in for a 09 model.Lets wait and see:thumb

FINAL DRIVE

04 1200GS with 20,000 on the clock seems a common fault !:blast

I think you'll find it's not too common and most are good and reliable. Mines at 60k with no problem but i am going to strip and rebuild the FD because I think it's time for seals and bearings. There is a little backlash in there as well so it won't hurt to have a peek inside.

Bearings and seals need replacing from time to time and they go for a pastime on 11**s so it's not new/.

I think the problem is that BuMW said it was a sealed unit on the 1200 and would never go wrong. Bet they wish they hadn't said that........
