As it says, finally decided to have a go at a 36k service myself, ordered all the necessary bits from Motorworks so I'm confident that they're all the right parts.

What have I done???

Spark plugs out / Rocker covers off / checked the valve clearances / new plugs / rocker covers back on with new gaskets / new air filter / new alternator belt / new oil and filter.

Put it all back together and started it up and it runs like a pig, popping , wont rev clean / bloody awful.

ONly major thing I've done is the valve clearances.

Followed the Haynes manual got "OT" TDC marking in inspection window, and when it didn't seem to tell me which side to start with, I phoned and asked......

Was told to rock the back wheel in gear and see which valves were moving. Then, adjust the ones that WERENT moving first. I therefore started with the left cylinder first. ( as if I was sitting on it).

Followed the Haynes and then did the other side, having rotated around to TDC again.

I've revisited it again, re done the clearances again, even swopped the old plugs back in, in case I had a duff one but all to no avail.

However, when I did take the new plugs out, they were all blacked / sooted up, just from starting and running it for about a minute.

When the originals came out initially, they were fine colour wise.

Any pointers please??? Havent got a clue what I've done. Havent messed with anything else?????????????:(

I bet you've dislodged one of the throttle cables from the housing on the throttle body, probably the right hand one i.e. cable is sitting on ege of adjuster, not in it. Someone will be along soon with the picture showing what I mean...

Re the valves, when the ot mark is in the middle of the inspection hole the valve clearances to adjust are those on whichever side the valves are all shut i.e. there is clearance at the adjusters on all four valves.

Check your throttle cables.

You have probably pulled one out of the seat at the throttle body.

Cheers,

Is this another one for the list of "disturbed throttle cables". Don't have the pic but if you have had the tank off or messed about around the cable to throttle body connection, check your cables are seated properly.

Someone will post "the" pic soon... all will become clear...

Ha f'ing ha! Took 2 mins to write and feed cat, move dog etc and there are 4 posts already :))

Blimey guys, you don't hang around do you!!!

I'm off out to the garage to have a quick look at me cables..............

Many thanks to you all. :thumb2

SORTED!!!!! Thanks very much guys.

Thanks guys, feel a right prat :hide

Offside cable must have been dislodged when I was trying to get that little black plug for the timing inspection window back in.

Really grateful to you all for your help.

1st time I've visited the technical pages, normally spend my time on the FS&W section. 1st time I've ventured into the home maintenance for a GS as well, so apologies if I've raised an issue that's been dealt with a thousand times before.

Cheers one and all. :D :clap :clap :clap
