Thanks for the kind words folks, hope a few of you will get up there and discover just how magnificent these isles can be, it’s still a long way if your ‘darn sarf’, but well worth the trip. Best off taking a whirlwind tour then keep coming back to explore different areas over a longer period. We are very privileged to have this scenery so close by – same could be said for Alps and like, but Scotland is considerably wilder in many respects, take a trip up winter climbing in remote locations and I’m pretty sure you are a lot more ‘out there’ than most of the main mountains of Europe. Taking to two legs is a real chance to explore just how remote the far NW is, however, we’re bikers!
A few specific replies
The roads are certainly nowhere near as good as 10 or 20 years ago, but compared to terrible lack of maintenance and abjectly dangerous conditions around here they seem damn good. We should complain far more often, Councils will only react to complaints generally – I get a bit sick of entering defects on their pages but I guess we should all do it more often. And I never raised a complaint about the closure we came across up there mind, hmmmm. Anyway, the roads are definitely generally better up there (due to less traffic I suspect)
Yorkshire boyz – we should have a get together. Appreciate it’ll be like herding cats but we should try and catch up, been a while!
Nice that the report brought back memories – Cultybraggan was an interesting place. I remember a lad in the cadets down at Thetford next to me shooting someone he didn’t like in the face with a blank, ah, happy days (I of course joke – lucky no lasting damage done – he was a right idiot!)
Standards of food presentation have improved greatly along with the food itself. No lemon got no Lemon Dave so Bev’s still with us. Wonder how the witch of Blubberhouse is fairing? Desolation is so rightly named then – the ex-locals had a very bad time of it up there under bad landlords and the like. Ironic it’s full of errant expensive motorhomes now.
I hope we’ll be getting back out and about with tent in a bit, had a fair few issues over past years but things seem to be improving. I hope to be back sleeping in puddles and living the hard life again soon. The odd 5* goes down well mind – but a bit of wild camping can’t be priced. I’m very lucky that Bev would much prefer the tent to the hotel!
Great hearing about where the food came from – there used to be a fellow there that had a place near the mission that sold seafood – still in area? Watched him unload the ‘prawns’ and enjoyed some great produce. It’s great how much standards for food have improved. I remember the old (bad) days, everywhere shut early and on one memorable instance my mate got Spag Bol…with a portion of cubed turnip on the plate! We spent the ‘odd’ occasion in the pub the week before when up walking.
And finally David – I’m very envious of your weather!!!
Hopefully it’s given a few folk a few ideas and upped the Scottish economy a few quid.
Scotland IS the place (up ‘til the midges come out)
Enjoying reading all the recent trip reports from up there - keep 'em coming
