worried re MPG

I think the risk of cat damage is more related to misfiring as the bike splutters and eventually dies. A serious misfire can shock the platinum/rhodium cores and cause physical damage to them.

How far to the gallon

This is a discussion that can go on forever - like 'how many miles you run on a set of tyres.' There are so many variables that it impossible to draw any real conclusions. From the previous messages you can get between 150 and 250 miles on a tankful!! If you have ever driven or been driven in a car with a continuous computer readout of mpg you will have noticed that the variations are amazing. Every time you open or close the throttle, every touch on the brakes, every little breeze ...whispers Louise.... No I am getting carried away now. To make a comparison between bikes it has to be the same bloke on each test, same route, same road/wind conditions, same meteo etc;etc. and take the average of about ten journies and then you will know if you GS uses more or less petrol than your previous/other model. With regard to backfiring damaging the catalyst - I doubt it; the R1100R used to bang away more or less by design and I never heard of a failed catalyst - but how would you know anyway?

Yes Scotty, I have the same problem with the warp core on my space ship. Do Halfords stock extra rhodium?

Only small quantities expensively packeted in a plastic bubble at three times wholesale price.
