I had my XChallenge serviced by Rainbow this week and they performed a new GT-1 software update

They said I might like it better:D

Took it out today and wow, can't believe the difference;)

The bike seems to have more torque, lower down the rev range and revs freer

Plus there are no vibes and none of the chugging/thumping around town (slower speeds) - it is so smooth............. can't fault it

It is a significant upgrade

That sounds good JohnnyB. Was it just included as part of the normal service or was it an optional thing?

Also, is it for all XCs or those with certain VINs etc? I'm tempted.

Well you said you'd post if I got it right. Glad its ok for you JB:thumb

For all you followers of software upgrades out there CIP disc 16 is what was pumped into Johnny's bike ooer missus .Its the last disc issued for the GT1 .

I really did notice the difference, all part of the service @ Rainbow

Vibes are gone and the 'chugginess' is gone

I even 'hoisted a minger' in 2nd off the throttle.................of course, on a private road:augie

Couldn't believe it would be so much different;)

Makes dealer servicing very worthwhile

CIP (coding, individualisation, programming) is a disc that's used on the GT1 (diagnostic unit) to access a bike's ecu /ecu's.
On JB's bike the engine ecu was upgraded, but say on a R1200GS it may be used to alter a host of other things ,add or delete accessories such as an alarm for example or to code in a new control unit etc etc.
Its not available to the public before anyone asks

Worth doing..................

Worth? It's worth what?:nenau
Not like a Yorkshireman to withhold a cost that he has just paid....
So, if it's 'in' a service, what is a service at Rainbow w-o-r-t-h?:P

Surely this should be a product enhancement so foc to owners?

Timpo.

Is the update only for the x bikes or will it work on a dakar? Just wondering seeing as the engines are all but identical and according to maxbmw's parts fiche the bms unit is identical?

G650X have a different engine...................well same Rotax 652cc

But has a different management system and maybe head, plus loads of magnesium in the engine etc - pushes out 5 more bhp and more torque than a F650GS engine, so doubt any software would be compatible

Booked mine in for a service at Chester today, 4 week lead time for a Saturday. Will get the 2 outstanding recalls done + I asked Paul there to do the software flash too. Thanks JB :thumb

You'll have to ask them or your local BMW dealer for an 'annual' service cost price

Not expensive................It really made a noticeable difference to my bike, which really suprised me

FOC? - it's not subject to an official BMW recall/product enhancement campaign - so is a dealer chargeable service item for the client - about 40 mins of labour should cover it

Make sure you ask for the ecu upgrade, armed with the info specific in post #4....................when you go in

Do you reckon that will work in the Loncin bikes, or will they have a different ECU? Seems to be quite a few bits on mine that weren't made in China, so perhaps the final assembly is somewhere in Germany? :nenau

Best ask a dealer, logically can't see why not

That's if Chester Motorad have still got their GT1 which I'm sure they probably will have.

Embedded ECU mod - GT1

Unusual that dealers records havent updated recent owners to this superb mod?
Also unusual that this is the only ECU upgarde ever since the bikes were produced?
has it come about through general moaning or BMW goodwill?

Why hasnt this potentially fab mod been broadcast by the dealers!

Arent they eager to get owners into their fold?

COME ON DEALERSHIPS GET IT SORTED!!!!

Anyone else who got the same experiences as Johnny ?

Looking to have it installed to my dealer today ..
Also asked dealer today why they don't install it by default and apparently they can only do 12 upgrades a year ....

Best regards, Yvo
