as the title says, my bike round the 80 mark makes a background noise like wo wow wow etc. Road speedrelated. Seems to come from the front of the ike.

Looked at the obvious - front wheel bearings and brakes - but nothing untoward. Any ideas?

does

your bike look like this at all?

Ahah....the wow wow (yoy-yoy) syndrome! They don't all do that Sir. :D

I too have this noise, in fifth gear only, and it IS a gearbox sound, not tyres or anything else.
Mine kicks in bang on 4K in 5th and really got on my tits when I bought the bike, it still pisses me off now but not to the same extent.

When I took my bike in and had words with the dealer one of the bods took it out and after 10 mins came back and said ..."yes, that's what we call 'yoy yoy..."

So, you and I have a "yoy-yoy" box. :thumb

I told him it gets on my tits, what can be done?

He said " It may be caused by the way the gears are cut, some bikes do it and some don't. Live with it a while, perhaps 5000 miles and we'll see if it disappears. I am happy to replace the box but I feel it's best wait awhile because it may clear."

I am now coming up to the 6K service and so will give it a mention again, failing a replacement I'll put it down to character. Pita character but character nonetheless.

You haven't got Kate Bush in your tank bag, have you? :D

Check to make sure your front wheel turns correctly and see if its rubbing on your brake pads.

if it's not that and it's still doing it then...

Take your front wheel off and see if the axel needs greasing (lubing)

Apart from those I need more info from yourself.

What's this sensible reply doing on this thread??? :D

As jc has said some bikes do it more than others, if it is the wow wow noise there is no cure your stuck with it.my first 2010 gsa did it so bad at 40mph I backed the bike to thd dealer.

That description is very much like the sound a friend had from his shiny new GSA a couple of years ago. The gearbox was changed under warranty.

Damn, that may have been sensible too. Although I have tried to limit the usefulness of the reply by being vague. :D

Really? :nenau

:blast

You fell for that?

Its not the gearbox, mine was replaced and the noise was exactly the same

Yes really. I've not fallen for anything , it will be changed some time soon. I gave it to 5K and beyond, now it's the dealers chance to play ball.

The wheel runs on ball bearings. Grease on the axle is there to prevent corrosion - nothing else. A dry or oily spindle wont make any difference to the noise.

Most likely the noise is tyre treads because the wheels are not the same size. 36/42 is the recommended pressures. Try them both at 42 or more and see if there is any difference then put them back to normal.

mine used to do it. i changed the tyres - it went away :)

So that would suggest my Anakee 2s are happy in all gear ratios on my bike except 5th.

Avoid 5th gear or change the tyres...decisions decisions...

ah, but the OP's original question mentioned nothing about gears. may just be his tyres as was mine.

yours sounds more like a fucked gearbox though, or possibly a random harmonic?

my old GSA used to "thrum" a bit in 4th. my newer GSA does it too, but much less, as did another GSA i rode. several 1150s i've ridden have done it too. i think it's something to do with the shaft, but it's just a guess.
