Before I removed the Wunderlich bash guard from the HP2, I got my colouring pens out and put some ruff marks down with regards to engine sump position to the bash guard

With the bash plate and fixing plate removed I now had to make head and tails of the hieroglyphic markings:blast

Remove the Wundelich sump fixing plate and put some accurate scribe marks to follow before I attacked with the grinder:D

If you look at the tail end you will see I have worked out my bends and angles to get the tail end of the plate up to the exhaust, as the shovel is not required now the Akrapovic exhaust is fitted and the Cat has gone.

The angles and measurements for the rear of the bash plate were found with this angle finder and a ruler

‘My Bash plate and Exhaust dimensions’ are approx 23° and 110mm from the bend point (just behind the rubber mounting point holes) to new rear flat point and future new rubber mounted fixing point, which in my view should have been on the stock bash plate sorry I mean shovel!! As we are all old duffers write it on the plate so you don’t loose the bit of paper with the dimensions on at a crucial point, yes the next stage is bending

AH the wings….. No chaps this is not a allways pant liner advert for hp2’s.
I’m going to invert the cut off wings back onto the bash plate. Extra trimming will need to fit them up under the exhaust headers. In my case twice, as I didn’t take enough meat of the bone the first time, still at least they are not too short!!!

With my press set up with some home made ‘dollies’ angle iron and a Ali T section.
Some careful measuring top and bottom of the plate to make sure its all square and parallel (my first bend came on top of one of the strengthening dimples, I gave the plate a grind at this point to aid the bending process)

Before attempting the bend I had a practice on some scrap to get my confidence up.. I’m glade I picked this Wunderlich bash plate up from ‘Mav’ for a song in the GSERS for sale section, because £250 for the stock Wunderlich bash plate is a joke, on a mod’ed HP2 it’s just a liability and not as good as the OME bash plate. Due to the fact it’s wider, longer, etc but what it does have is a useful fixing system.
Unless you have no intention of going off road or still have the stock exhaust of cause.
With the stock headers/cat have a look at the rear mount that’s coming later in the next chapter and maybe you’ll be able to do something similar which would help you not rip the bash plate of the rubber mounts off road.

With the practic out of the way here's the real thing:clap

Check the angle with the bevel:rob

Out of the press, ready to see if it’s any where near to a fit:thumb
DSCF6455.JPG

It’s on and doesn’t hit the rear section of the exhaust headers what a result;)
DSCF6458.JPG

:blastI need to trim the wings again! Yes again! Maybe third time lucky, There just too close to the under side of the headers for my liking.

Not being a sufficiently competent ali welder myself:comfort
It’s off to Cambridge Motorcycles to see Spike:)

Tacked and ready to run the weld.

With the wings in place it’s off home to see if I’ve got it right
DSCF6459.JPG
Yep a bad pic I know, but the welding is top notch:bow

Back home and it all still fits and getting to be something that I think will do a better job at engine protection than the OME BMW or the Wunderlick EXTREM Bash Plate my Arse Or as it’s fondly known in this house JCB/HP2E back actor bucket :hide

The next chapter will be how to make the infill’s from the wings to the bash plate, gusset or even gusset’s (not quite shore which way to go yet) to the rear section of the bash plate and a rubber mounted rear bracket to the HP2E sub frame to hold the back of the bash plate up.

Next stage

Things are moving on:beerjug:

After running down to the local metal dealer, I picked up some 4mm Alli.

With a tape I measure the length and height of my wing fill-in’s.

DSCF6472.JPG

Mark with a square then cut up 4 peaces
DSCF6473.JPG

Find a suitable bar to replicate the profile of the wings and then press
DSCF6474.JPG

and here it is:thumb
DSCF6475.JPG

Get hold of some carboard bend it to the Wing profile, and mark it up
DSCF6476.JPG
Don't forget to number the cardboard cuts and the corners of the plate:toungincheek

Mark up the alli new alli profiles
DSCF6477.JPG

Cut and check for fit
DSCF6478.JPG

Only 3 more to go and the rear gussets and then off to Cambridge Motorcycles for some welding:beerjug:
