Wunderlich/Techlusion Tested

I installed a Wunderlich/Techlusion piece last week and took it for a good wringing out on Saturday. My bike is currently stock but will have a full Remus and "Blue" filter by tomorrow :D I don't normally get too excited about stuff of this sort but I was truely impressed after Saturday's 400 mile ride. The main differences are a smoother and more controlled response from the throttle and a perception of more power. Fuel mileage does not seem to be effected to any great extent as well. The low speed performance is also enhanced. My bike always "bumped" around a bit in traffic and stop and go situations. That is for the most part eliminated now. As mentioned, roll-on power seems stronger particularly in the 4-5K part of the rev range under heavy throttle. If I grab a handfull in 1st gear the front wheel will come up which is something I never felt before with this bike and not something I did on purpose. I'm really curious to see what its like with the Remus and Blue installed. They claim a 15% increase in torque which sounds a bit optimistic but we'll see. I'll be taking it for another scorcher this coming Saturday and will report back.

There are a few points I was not happy with regarding the installation.

1. The right and left side wiring harnesses are different lengths and both are too long. I'm imagining they made this to work on all the R1200 bikes so that's probably why.
2. The main wire harness to the unit itself is way too long. There is hardly enough room to stash the coiled wire under the seat. I'm going to cut a couple of feet out of it when I get a chance. The longer length would be nice if you wanted to mount the controller by the gauges but I've got it velcroed where the owners manual goes at the rear of the tank.
3. The plugs that attach to the injectors do not have the rubber gaiters the original has. They are using the exact same plugs as OE so it would seem they could also get their hands on the gaiters. I'm going to silicon up the area where the wires go in in order to keep water out.
4. The model specific installation instructions are a bit lacking.

More next Saturday..

BTW, Santa Cruz BMW has a 15% off sale going on right now if you buy $300 or more. Just a FYI :)

Cheers for that. Certainly sounds very good so far :thumb

Looking forward to hearing the results once you've freed up the breathing with pipe and filter...................

How'd you go about setting these units up? Surley it's down to guestimation if a Dyno with exhaust analyser is not used??!

The instructions give you the parameters for a stock setup and also with a full Remus and "Blue" air filter. I imagine any other combo and you'd need a dyno or a very intelligent seat of the pants.

Thanks for that..........I guess the answer to my next question is lurking on the forum somewhere already but sometimes it takes sooooo much reading to find what you're after!

Is there nobody that has the facilities to remap the ECU? - best money I ever spent on my SV1000 was a couple of hours dyno work (9 runs in all) with the bike hooked up to something called a Teka (or Tekka?) - ECU remapped. The difference was unbelievable, even the most insensitive seat of the pants dyno couldn't fail to notice and send a smile message to riders face :D

So this techlusion thing is like a power commander??

I have a power commander on my Mille and is great for tuning out the lumps and bumps in the fueling when you bolt on that noisy end can. I bought the serial version and can use my laptop to load up different maps, which was nice. I had one for the road and one for the track, there was an adaptor to fit a palm pilot etc so you could use that instead of hauling a laptop anywhere.

I may have to invest in one if I do decide to go loud and get a filter :)

Not quite. The Wunderlich/Techlusion allows you to change the mixture via buttons over 6 different runing modes but has no provision that I know of to change the mapping externally. The following is from the first page of the instructions taken from the Santa Cruz BMW site:

Function Theory
Modern engines have to be able to pass stringent emissions test and requirements for different countries, therefore the works settings represent merely a compromise. The PerformanceController (“P.C.”) circumvents this compromise and optimises the engine function in a simple fashion. The entire usable RPM range is broken down into 6 sections or modes. The 8 coloured LED’s at the front show in what mode you are presently in (tickover, acceleration, cruise etc.) and with the help of the adjustment buttons the fuel mixture can be adjusted. Using the three buttons on the front and reading the easily understandable instructions fine tuning of the fuel to air ratio can be accomplished. It is now possible to achieve a harmonious engine function throughout the RPM range and to adjust it to the user’s personal riding or driving style. Basically, the PerformanceController (“P.C.”) allows the rider to use the classic adjustments of a carburettor for the modern fuel injected bike, but with the comfort of pushing electronic buttons instead of turning screws. The beauty of this system is: It doesn’t re-program or change the bike’s ECU.

Removing of the PerformanceController (“P.C.”) from your BMW will return it to its stock settings.

Hope this helps.

My bike has always suffered fom the "bump" too but the most recent software update from BMW all but cured this problem. It really has transformed the bike, which before was a pain in the rear end to ride in slow traffic etc.

Hmm, with a totally standard bike, exhaust etc I can confirm the front will certainly come up if you grab a "handfull" in 1st. Or 2nd, and even a small rise in 3rd :D

Well I actually got around to fitting the Techlusion to the 1200 today. Basically the unit plugs into 4 points on the bike, and simply slots inline into the existing system. The four places the Techlusion connects in are each side oxygen sensor and each side throttle body.

It's a 10 minute job to fit/remove and requires nought but a small screwdriver to unclip the connections. I didn't register the lack of a gaiter on the throttle body plug, I'll have a look. With a bit of luck the harness will reach the clocks. I'm not so keen on focusing on my groin while putting the bike through her paces - Ooh err

The bikes been off the road for absolutely ages but I really haven't missed riding in all the crap, I must be getting old :)

I've also wired my Hella FF50's as driving lights to come on with the main beam plus installed a pair of switched Micro DE Fogs for use with dip beam.

Other, not yet tried mods are a pair of Michelin Pilot Roads.

The bikes almost together again and I'm awaiting a new Optimate SP to give the battery some maintenance as it's been left for a while and I just know it'll not start.

I'm gonna take the baffle out of the Remus too now I've got the Techlusion fitted. I'm going to keep to a stock air filter for the time being I think, I can't see that a 'blue' one (??) will make much difference and I'm loath to sacrifice engine longivity. Does anyone know what exactly the 'Blue' filter is?

It'll be interesting to see how Marcparnes gets on when the can and airfilter are fitted. Marc, are you fitting the Y piece that gives a much greated de-restriction than just the can which gives little if any advantage supposedly.

I suppose I'd better take the bike out for a thrash, it's still covered in sh!te from the 3 Stags w/e, christ that was the last time I rode it

Hi,
I have the Techlusion, full Remus including the Y pipe and the "blue" filter. I've put about 2K miles on this setup so far. The difference in smoothness and power are substantial. The low speed running is particularly smooth now. The setup doesn't so much change the character of the engine but enhances it. Where it was strong before it is just stronger now. The sound is deeper and not exceptionally loud. It reminds me of an Offy (Offenhauser) motor that they used to run in midgets. I can still hear what that thing sounded like running two straight pipes down the side of the car. Offy Sound With my earplugs in I can't hear it at highway speeds but working it hard on the backroads brings the sound out quite nicely. I'm so glad I sprung for this upgrade. I normally don't bother with aftermarket exhaust systems since they rarely seem to do much except make things louder and my old ears have gotten sensitive. In this case it really made a fun bike just that much more fun. And isn't that what its all about? :D
