Hi folks,

Lofty wisdom of the collective required. I recently obtained a set of Wunderlich upper crash bars from a fellow UKGSer which are listed to fit R1200GS (2013 to 2016). Here's a link to the bars in question https://www.wunderlich.de/shop/en/b...ank-crash-bar-adventure-style-m26450-400.html and a picture of the bars and black bracket is also attached.

When attempting to fit the black centre bracket which bolts the bars to the bike just above the front wheel I've come across the following issue:

In the other pic you can see the grey frame mount that is utilised. The two hex bolts that require opening go from left to right in the picture, and they screw into the threaded receivers (arrowed) which sit proud of the bracket. At the bottom of the pic is the black centre bracket that came with the bars - when I unscrew the two bolts, and then marry the bracket up to the frame mount, the thread receivers prevent it from laying flat against the grey frame section. If fitted this way it would make for a very weak and unstable mount which makes me think something's not right.

I recall seeing a thread a good while back about a change in the upper crash bar mounting points on the bike that occurred in the middle of a manufacturing year (ie. early '16 bikes were different to late '16 GS1200 LC bikes) and am wondering if I have fallen foul of the same issue. Have had a good look for the thread but couldn't find it.

So just wondering if anyone trying to fit Wunderlich upper bars to a 2016 R1200GS LC has come across the same issue, and if so did you manage to find a solution?

TIA,
Seán.

Another quick question for those who have a 2013 to 2015 R1200GS - is the design of the grey frame mount on your bike the same as in the pic I posted?

The gray frame mount is the same as my late 14 model. I have different crash bars but mine mount to the the opposite side of gray area to your arrows. Can’t see how using the other side would work properly as installing bolts from right to left wouldn’t secure things properly.

Think you are simply missing the longer bolts that came with the bars, although mine is a 2017, the bars came with longer bolts to replace the original bolts on the bike, pictures below, hope it helps.

That was exactly my thinking, the bracket I have fits in a way that doesn't provide much surface to surface contact - just wanted to see if it was by design or I had bars for a different model year...

Thanks for that sir - you are a gent. I can see from your photo that the inner face of the black bracket sits against the outside of the grey thread receivers when fitted - does that provide a reasonably sturdy mount to the bike frame?

Much appreciated,
Seán.

To be honest Sean, and a little red faced, a week after I installed the bars top and bottom, I lost footing and dropped the bike on some gravel, just a slight mark on top engine bar, they done the job perfectly, few more pics below, to show how top is attached to bottom.

Interesting thread. Any chance of some pics of how they look on the bike please?

Are they fairly easy to fit?

They look good.
Thanks

The bottom bars had to be spaced out with a few washers to give a little clearance for the X-head cylinder guards, otherwise everything else was perfect, however 2016 bars will not fit 2017 onwards, there is a slight difference somewhere.
