X-challenge full width aluminium radiator.

Where GMX are getting the prices from i just don't know?:nenau
I have sent another email asking for them to look at the quote again, failing that i will persue the cheaper quote further.

Timpo.

I'll see if i can find the notes i made on the phone conversation i had with GMX, including who i spoke to. I might help when squeezing them a little.

Who is the other manufacturer (PM if you don't want to broadcast on it here while your trying to sort a deal), and what sort spec are they offering?

Nathan

I don't know whether anybody has beaten me to it but I have sent a message to the ebay seller. As his radiators are probably made in china it will need careful measurements to be taken but I'm happy to do that if it gets us a cheaper deal.

Yes, I messaged the seller that day, as yet no reply though......

I have a reply. :)

He is asking for a sample or design drawing. Minimum order is 5 radiators. Obviously no price until he gets the measurements but looking at the price of his other units it has to be cheaper than the competition. I'll get the camera and tape measure out.

Pinkytiff had his radiator replaced recently, and may have his old one still if your looking for one to send as a sample.?

You need to be very careful when getting quotes for this type of work. Find out what the flow rate of the core they are going to use is, you could easily end up with a bigger radiator that isn't as good as the stock one.

Thanks for the info - nothing is as simple as it seems. Does anybody know what flow rate I should be aiming for?

Having the cooling fins a little further apart would probably be a good thing as well. Thanks to the slots in the back of the mudguard, the central part of my radiator got completely clogged with mud. I have spent hours on it with a hose, brush and road traffic film remover but it still can't get it to flow air as well as the edges. I now have the slots covered; better to obstruct the airflow a bit than block the radiator completely.

the other option would be to have it re cored to full width so all that requires is two saw cuts and reweld the ends back on the wider core

Not that simple most of the time. Some cores have silicon seal where the cores join the end plates. Melt that and it's bin fodder. You might get away with it if the end tanks are plastic, and you can find someone willing to have a crack at welding it, but used aluminium isn't the best stuff in the world to weld in that situation.

I have read somewhere the rad fins in the core are 12/inch on the rally bike rads, this give optimum cooling for the application.

Timpo have you tried speaking to Serck Motorsport. They make rads / cooling solutions for just about everything in motorsport even up to f1 and they deffo do ali bike rads too nowadays. Prob wont be cheap though.

Just Performance HK

I have exchanged a number of emails with Henry, the ebay seller in HK. I still need to provide detailed measurements of the mounts and water connections but from the information and pictures I have supplied so far he has come back with an estimated price of $199 (£125) plus postage.

His postage rates seem to vary a bit on ebay, and there is the possibility of VAT and customs duty, but a worst case would be around £200 to your door. His ebay feedback has over 1200 sales and 99.4% positive.

To be considered:
I like the idea of a product developed with a bike there. Sending dimensions to HK should be OK but it depends how accurate the measurements are, and there is always the chance of something unexpected. My view would be to get 1 rad made and sent across so any adjustments can be made to subsequent orders.

I, for one, can't stretch to £350 +vat + postage. Bulk order discount is probably possible but will depend on the size of the order. A cheaper cost is likely to result in more orders and more discount.

From here:
A friend of a friend regularly ships containers back from China. I could enquire about getting a box of rads in the container - reduced price shipping and customs duty sorted more easily.
I will post over on ADVrider to find out if anybody there is interested, but also if anybody has 1st hand experience of his products.

I'm interested

Yes - interested depending on price as I don't rate the OE rads at all.

Like Rossi, if it's sub £200 I'm a definate. If it's more I'll have to consider who or what I can sell before I can commit. Sorry if that doesn't help too much.

IIRC £250- the cost of a genuine replacement BMW radiator according to pinkytiff.....

Timpo, how are you getting on with your enquiries?

I have taken my rad off to take detailed measurements and attempt to clean the muck out of the fins. After a long soak, careful scrub with a brush and rinse under the tap I have a little better flow in the middle but not much.

I'll see how it goes but I will probably be looking at a replacement soon. If we can get one made in UK for sensible money I will go with that. Otherwise I will send the measurements to Henry to get one made in HK.

The guy I spoke to is on holiday until 1st March, I will resume the quest then.....
