X-challenge full width aluminium radiator.

A local Gasgas dealer recommends silver tape to block off the air to 1 radiator when running bikes in during the winter. He once had one cold seize as he rode it up the road in sub-zero temps but aparently this is only a problem during the first few hours of engine use.

No reason why a similar technique couldn't be used with the big rad though. A flat sheet of plastic or aluminium could be slid under the rad guard or held to the front of it with cable ties. If the fan comes on you know you need a little more cooling and remove it.

i have 2 questions .1 maybe timpo would know best. is the a reason the is no thermostat ? is it possible to fit 1 on the big rad ?? and 2 timolga .did you ever measure the husaberg rad ? could it be made to work or is it a no go. i have a trip round south america planed and when im in the amazon were the is lots of mud 30-40 c and 90% humidity i think the is a good chance the bike will be getting verry hot but when in bolivia at 5000 metres the will be no need for a bigger rad . so i am not to shore what is the best thing to do is .maybe a oil cooler that i can bypass or a second fan or a bigger rad with a thermostat would be bast.

AFAIK the thermostat is removed to make the radiator bigger- it probably allows the core to be extended by 2" by not having the 'stat in.

One of the best things you can do to help keep your bike cool is change the front fender, or at least blank off the holes in the back of the front fender.

I didn't, and my original radiator got packed full of mud- which then dried and becomes almost impossible to remove.

I'm running a pace radiator, and have no cooling issues since. I've also fitted one of stephan's front fenders, which has done a great job of keeping the radiator clean.

And my bike spends most of it's life being ridden in mud and dust.

As for cold seizures, i've only ever heard of them happening on 2 strokes.

I took ages trying to clean the mud out of mine as the centre section of the rad was almost completely blocked. I got there in the end but it still isn't totally clear.

The cold siezures on the Gasgas were 2 strokes. Never heard of them in 4 strokes either.

My bike also runs cooler since I fitted a larger fuel injector and disconnected the O2 sensor. Using a power commander to enrich the mixture should have a similar effect.

Name that hard part

Hey Timpo,

where is your rad hard part from it looks similar to the TT but has the extra stops protruding on each side, is that custom?

thx,

Clayton

Timpo, did you ever find a cover to fit over the radiator?

I can't speak for Timpo, but i requested a cover when i ordered mine, only to be told they were in development.

Still not heard anything 14 months on.:nenau

I'm still using the standard cover, combined with stefans front fender, which doesn't have the vents in the back, and it's fine.

No problems at all, and even on hot days the fan rarely comes on!

Thanks....so the standard cover fits ok ?

On the fender, I'm using a Husky Enduro fender in my setup and drilled holes in the back to aid cooling! Didn't stop the fan coming on though. I have another without holes so not a problem.

I still have the original coner on mine i seem to remember i needed it to fix the sides panels to. i'd loose the vented fender. it allows the front wheel to throw mud and other shite into the radiator core. DAMHIKT ! it was an expensive fix :-(

I have been emailing Pace and have just received news that the rad cover has just been upgraded for 'harsh environments'. Whatever that means?

However, I take the implication to means there is a cover available now! Think I'll ask them how this works with the side panel fixings.

Please keep us posted- how much do they expect to sell it for?

I think the rad and cover is £375 but will clarify that. Last communication with Mark is that he is making 'some' and will get back to me. That was after I asked him how the cover worked with the side panels.

I will keep you posted as soon as I hear anything more.

Well the time has come that I have to replace my rad. It sprang a leak earlier in the week on the way to work. Fortunately a friendly bus driver shouted out of his windows at a set of lights and I was able to stop the engine and push to the side of the road before I ran the bike dry. Radweld didn't work so I had to call out the breakdown to get home.

I did some calling around and ended up taking the rad to a local specialist to investigate options. The verdict was failure due to alloy corrosion, probably due to road salt riding through the winter. No point in trying to repair it but I have been quoted 200 +vat for a custom replacement so am going with that. It will be similar to the pace rad except made out of brass and copper rather than alloy (a bit heavier but apparently stronger and easier to repair) and no header bottle. I have known plenty of bikes running without bottles so may do without but it shouldn't be too hard to rig something up.

Hopefully I will be back on the road next week. Will post back how I get on.

Kito is currently touring South America, he has the rad with the protection louvre fitted. There was a report from him that the initial louvre welds had failed, and I beleive Mark at Pace has altered the louvre design and mounting. A revised has been sent out from Pace to Kito and he should have some feedback for us soon.
I still have my original Pace rad fitted, and having just completed a 2 week tour of Northern Portuguese trails, I am still extremely happy with the item that Pace made for me/us. Only during extremely technical sections did the fan be called into service.

Had it on the road for over a week now. Fan hasn't come on once, except when I ran it up in the shed to test it. Will need to get some pics up to show the rad. It isn't as well finished as the pace rad - he re-used the mounting and lower fan brackets from the original rad and attached them to the top and bottom of the new rad, but once it is fitted all that is hidden anyway. No problem so far running it without a header but I have sourced a plastic bottle to use as a header anyway. Just need to get round to fitting it.

Got a reply the other day requesting a quote, Paceproducts radiator for the G650X with front protection louver, £450 including VAT plus another £20 for postage within the UK.
