Anyone had this done by a dealer/local friendly mechanic?

I'm very much a "keen amateur" when it comes to spannering, but this one seems a little beyond my fairly basic skills.

What sort of price am I looking at to have the job done? My Challenge, new to me in the last 6 months, has around 15k on it (as with many of them it's had a new speedo at some point in it's life) and I've got a feeling the valves have never been looked at.

It's sometimes (more often than not really) hard to start when turning the motor off for a short period ie when stopping for fuel or turning off to let walkers, horsers or... urrrm... doggers pass when I'm out laning!

Sounds and feels like all of a sudden there's not enough juice in the battery to spin the starter and it bogs down. Leave it a few seconds and try again and it usually fires right up.

Hi Rob, I'm no expert mechanic but I'd check with BMW your battery has been replaced. There was a recall for them so your local dealer will be able to tell you if it's been done or not but your bike has the same symptoms mine had before its new battery.

things

besides the battery,
the idle actuator gets clogged up with gunk, cleaning it could help.
the machine brain retains bad habits, pulling fuse b? - 15Amp and draining the capacitor makes it forget these.
or disconnecting the battery for a while.
reset the starting procedure
key on, dash lights cycled,
open and close the throttle two times
key off
key on, lights cycled, starting without throttle
....go

Never knew that :thumb2

Cheers chaps, will look into those before launching in to having the valves done.

It's certainly had a new battery courtesy of the previous owner not long before I purchased it – seems to hold a decent charge and I'd be surprised if that was the culprit... but then I'm often surprised when it comes to mechanical things!

Pulling the fuse and resetting the starting procedure sounds nice and easy (and cheap) so I'll give those a go before looking at the idle actuator...once I've found out what is is and where it is!

the actuator is simple, 2 bolts behind the right hand panel. i had god awful hot starts, took min 10-15min before would start.

cleaned actuator twice and re set it and pulled fuse/batt. the issue is gone and biek starts in 2 turn even when hot after slow bog riding

valve clearance problems will generally show up with cold start issues, the motor will sound like it has low compression spinning over ok but not firing.it would take a couple of hours to do the shims ,so recon on about £50 to £80 labour from an indy plus parts.
