A faulty horn resulted in a blown fuse. To identify the right fuse, I pulled them out one by one, tested the fuse with an AVO metre and replaced it. The culprit was the 3rd one down (7.5A), changed it and done.
However, when doing this to the first one (15A one, first from the front of the bike), when replacing it, the dashboard went mad, started flashing, got ABS on the LCD, then back to normal. Ignition was off..! The fuse is fine.
However, the bike now will not start. The starter motor turns. It feels as if there is no spark / electric problem. All other electrics such as lights, horn, work fine. Can anyone help pls? Is there a relay that may have gone? Other? Many thanks.

It's easy enough to check to see whether it is producing a spark so I would start there in an attempt to narrow down the circuit's that you need to be looking at.

Only failure 're spark I have ever had is the ignition switch going u/s which was due to one of the wires becoming detatched from one of the pins in the bottom of the switch. You can ' inspect them by removing the black cover from the bottom of the ignition switch assembly.

Another one could be your side stand switch playing up. You can short this out (which is still on my ttd list).

Good luck and keep us updated.

If of was all ok before you pulled a fuse it suggests to me that a management system has lost a primary program

Thanks. Wires & stand switch all OK.
Management system? I assume there is no way to check that from a 'shed'. I've checked all fuses and relays I can find. So dealer visit inevitable? Cheers.

I had a similar incident on my xc a few years back, under the right hand side tank panel there is the starter solenoid, wiggle that about and see what happens, worked on mine.

OK, the problem is related to the side stand after all...(I think...) Newbie at maintenance warning!
This is what happens:
1. stand down, in gear, clutch in - no
2. stand down, neutral - yes
3. stand up, neutral or in gear - yes
I would have thought that if it was the side stand switch, the bike would not start in 2.
Does this makes sense? Any one know which part is at fault? Thanks all

If its like a GSA then it will start in 2 but engage a gear and it will stop.

iirc the logic of each of the 3 points is correct.

I have one with a switch starting to fail, it started when I was on the taffy Dakar so managed to get by by lowering and raising the stand a few times as if to clean the much from the contacts in the switch. It got me home.

It will be shorted out soon.

Suggest you could try similar to see if it solves it (its a fairly common thing to go)

Thanks. It used to start with the stand down, in gear, clutch in.
I am worried about an intermittent failure which will fully fail at the wrong time
I have searched how to short this switch. There seems to be confusion on colour of wires and number (2 wires - short red to white; 3 wires - red and purple, purple and black, other...) Grateful to anyone with definitive 'short the switch' procedure. Thanks

An alternative way of dealing with the issue is to detach the switch and leave it coiled up under your seat in teh stand up position. Not what I did but a quick solution in case you ever want to refit it.

I've done this on my bike- i cut the cable down to the switch, a few inches from the plug under the seat and twisted the cables together until the bike went. I'll strip the tape off tonight and see which colours you need to connect and leave open. IIRC there are 3 wires all together.
