Having just bought myself an XC , I am giving it a couple of weeks of daily use to shake down any issues . So far only real issue which I knew about before buying is badly corroded RHS engine cases/water pump cover where I intend to fit new ones . However when the bike is on the side stand it sits very upright , to teh point where it feels very unstable - the side stand has been modified with the standard foot cut off and a wider foot welded on so not sure if this has lengthened it and is the cause of the problem or whether the Wilbers shock which is fitted has slightly lowered the bike and that is the issue . Can someone measure their side stand and let me know the length please . Looking on Rainbow parts fische is shows different parts numbers for the side stands for XMoto , XChallenge and XCountry ( XCountry shows two lengths 250mm and 304mm)

Cheers

John

From the end of the 'toe' when it is on the floor to the centre of the fixing bolt the other end is approx 37cm.

Glad to hear you found one, did you go for the Italian one or find something closer to home ?

Hi Gaz - Thanks for this , just measured mine and from the centre of the bolt to bottom of the base of the foot where it would be in contact with the ground is 32cm when measured down the centreline of the side stand shaft . Can you measure yours the same way as I think a measurement to the toe is misleading as it is the base of the stand that hits the ground and sets the height . If not it must be the shock height as if mine is 32cm and too long and yours is 37cm and OK then a difference of 5cm is huge !

I ended up buying one of a fellow UKGSer , hiring a van and doing a 600 mile round trip so wasn't too bad at all . So far very happy with it , I already have a XMoto so know the bikes pretty well . I've been out on it every day whilst I've been off work over the Xmas holidays and have done around 500 miles so far . The plan is to fully strip it down , overhaul/check everything over and then get it both mechanically and cosmetically sorted . I'll post some pictures of progress and no doubt a few questions along the way for the XC techies ;-) . Here's a couple of pictures for now on my way out for Xmas lunch....

I know its a long shot but I have the BMW/Akrapovic end can on my XMoto and would really like one for the XC . Anyone have one lurking unwanted in their garage , happy to do either a straight purchase or even a part ex plus cash with either a standard good condition BMW end can or an Aluminium REMUS one thrown in

Looks tidy, from Essex ? GFJ from this forum had an Akrapovic a while back, I suspect he will be along shortly or drop him a PM. I have just fitted the Leo Vince which fits nicely and is a lot lighter.

Had pm's from a few about the Akro. I know I have packaged it up and its in my garage somewhere, but due to doing a van conversion can't get to anything near the back at the mo. Will post up when I am in a position to sell.

Looks a tidy one that John.

The RRP is £1300 so could be worth fighting your way to the back of the garage

From Essex indeed ;-)

I' had already reached out to GFJ to see if he wanted some beer tokens for his Akrapovic !

Yes - pleased with the XC Gareth , some corrosion on LHS to water pump and engine case but I will just swap them out for new covers as I need to do the waterpump as it is weeping very slightly . I have started to strip the bike to overhaul it and the only other issue I had was a "sticky" clutch . Sure enough the clutch cover has no insert and is badly worn , so will swap this out for the modified 2008 XCountry one . The shaft looks fine it appears to be just the case worn

So - a word of warning !!

I had agreed a deal with another UKGSer for an Akrapovic . He went to his garage yesterday and took photos which he sent me and we subsequently agreed a sale

Today when he returned to his garage it had been broken into and the Akrapovic , his tools and other motorbike parts stolen !

So please be careful and aware of your surroundings

I will not name the other UKGSer , he can shout up himself if he wishes

Please watch out for an Akrapovic being offered on the cheap - it may be this one

Hi,
measuring it your way puts mine at 35cm,
cheers

Thanks Gaz , Looks like the bike has perhaps been lowered when the Wilbers has been put on then . I have a standard Air Shock so will have to see how it sits when I fit that . Either way it looks like the side stand is 2cm shorter than standard and the bike still sits too upright so I will either have to raise the bike or shorten the stand even further !

When I had my wilbers shortened by 7mm at service it had the same effect; bike was too upright when on the stand to be comfortable (a strong gust of wind away from a catastrophe). I regretted doing that, as it's a road use only shock now.

I've attached a scan of the part numbers I ordered when I bought the modified xcountry clutch cover - check what they order you as on the 1st order I placed I ended up with brand new parts, but they were exactly the same as the ones I had taken off (despite asking for the cover with the bush insert) I've not fitted mine yet, but from what I have read if you are keeping the original shaft then you may have to shorten it a little to be able to get the retaining circlip in. Also, the shaft seal is 21 21 7 700 173 (seal size 12x18x4.5 - which will fit into the replacement cover), not 11 14 7 700 121 (which is a shaft seal but the one that goes in towards the crank cases.

What made you check the water pump (i.e. any symptoms - I must admit I've never checked any of mine, and never had any problems (that I know of!))

Hi Gareth - thanks for this , I have checked and I have ordered the exact parts you have listed , The first number on each line in the list below is the original part and the last number in each line is the part it is replaced by . I have also went for a new operating shaft to save the messing on with shortening the original .

11 14 7 699 389 Clutch Cover 1 £118.01 £118.01 11 14 7 700 331
11 14 7 699 390 Clutch Cover - Gasket 1 £6.25 £6.25 11 14 7 700 194
11 14 2 343 036 Clutch - Needle Sleeve 1 £4.91 £4.91 21 21 7 701 501
11 14 2 343 037 Clutch - Needle Sleeve 1 £6.71 £6.71 21 21 7 700 120
21 21 7 682 692 Clutch - Operating Shaft 1 £57.00 £57.00 21 21 7 700 306
21 21 2 343 259 Clutch - Shaft Seal 1 £4.66 £4.66 21 21 7 700 173
21 21 2 343 258 Clutch - Circlip 1 £1.20 £0.00

I really only checked the water pump as I was replacing the LHS cover because of very bad corrosion/flaking paint and guessed it was likely so bad due to coolant vapour escape - you can see the damage on the picture below :

I have now almost got the bike fully stripped and will remove the engine cover tomorrow . Swinging arm came off fine , and only two bolts had to be drilled out and re-tapped - the radiator fixing screw and the RHS bottom frame bolt :-)

Wow . . . I've never gone that far in one go; only either done the front or the rear.

Only other thing I would suggest is to remove the engine mounting bolts from the rear and grease them (I can't work out from the pics whether you have done this but they are long recessed hex head bolts that go through the rear lower side frames)

Wow indeed - big project.
I have a cheeky query. Does anyone have handy or know where to get the spare parts list to repair / service the water pump? I've had no problems as yet with mine but I am planning a long trip and would like to take these as spares. I understand usual issues are the shaft and its seal, gear???, O-rings and gaskets. Many thanks

Yes - all out bar one and that will be removed in the morning
