XChallenge Wheel Options

Hi All,

I'm thinking of upgrading the wheels on my XChallenge. The favoured option at the moment is to use Excel A60s and keep the standard spokes and hubs. Any reasons why this is a bad idea apart from the cost?

I did consider going for the A60's when i changed my front end and needed a new front wheel, but decided against them for the time being.

IIRC there is quite a price difference between the A60's and the standard excel MX/enduro rims, and the basis the standard excel rims are good, i opted for those for the time being (i had lots of other areas on the bike where the extra cash would have been put to better more effective use).

Are you looking to do any other changes to the bike?

The favoured option at the moment is to use Excel A60s....

A60 rims are a moto-x application. Sure you can use an A60 front in a 21x1.60 size, but the rear rims are only 19".....iirc.
Get yourself down to Talon, they will lace Excel rims into your own hubs using HD spokes. they will not be keen to re-use spokes, and for the prices of them, it's not worth the hassle.

Thanks for all the replies - sounds like standard Excels from Talon might be the way forward.

Next question is what colour? Black rims seem to have been fashionable for a while and they do look great but I was thinking silver, maybe with a red seat to try for an early G/S look. A bit off topic I know but any opinions welcome.

I bought the bike for overlanding, to replace my KTM LC4 (1st generation). I've done a couple of trips on it and some MCC trials. I need it to be a do-it-all - I was contemplating entering the Welsh 2-Day Enduro on it. When it's reached some sort of finished state (it will never actually be finished) I'll post some pics. Mods will be in the wheels, fuel carrying and luggage departments. For some reason I have no problem with the seat. That said I don't look forward to sitting on it either. I've no intention of changing the forks though I do appreciate the added comfort and safety decent suspension can bring - the WPs I had on my KTMs were great. No intention of a faring either - being a trials rider I like to keep an eye on the front wheel from time to time.

One of the best mods you can do is change the forks and there are lots of options, not all expensive. I put Shiver 45mm off a Husky on mine (minor mod to the std triple and a brake caliper bracket from Hotrod). uses standard wheel hub and axle. The whole cost was €400 and that's without selling the originals.

Just had a SM Pro rim laced to standard hub. SM Pro is lighter and stronger than A60. Cheaper too. Doing BAM and ROB this year so I will find out if it's any good. Matt black finish looks good too.

Did you use new spokes or re-use the original spokes?

Prior to having your present rear hub re-laced, inspect the inner side of the hub, where the outside of the cush-rubber rub, as if the bike has been used in dirty/wet enviroments, the inner face of the hub will be worn. This is an ideal time to purchase a new hub.
That way yoy will also keep your old wheel intatc as spare and have a new new wheels built, ie, new hub from BMW and new spokes, rim, rimlock from your chosen supplier.
I will definately need a new hub 'next time round'....

New spokes. Just did front wheel. Rear should be strong enough. I hope!
