Hi, This may seem simple but...

I bought an '09 X which seemed to have excessive play at the twistgrip, that is the adjuster couldn't remove all the play!. I've checked the twist grip internals, not much to go wrong here (?), bought a new cable from BMW and it's exactly the same as that fitted to the bike...?

Checked 3 different fiche systems and MaxBMW seemed to have the answer as it showed photos of the cable ends against a rule for... the CLUTCH! However the Xchallenge/moto versions also showed photos of the throttle cable and since the throttle body 'ends' are all the same I assume the inner cable should 'stick out' 8cms as in the photo (I'm assuming of course that the inner is pulled out completly?), mine (both new and old) stick out 9.5cms?

If you have an Xcountry and would like to help please advise 'stick out' length, position of cable in twistgrip housing and adjuster position (the last two by no. of threads showing) so I have a definitive answer before I start looking at other items on the bike.

If you have an Xch/moto, though the o/all cable is longer, the 'stick out' length should be the same (?), so please advise dimensions as above...

If you're reading this bit you're either extremely bored or want to be helpful, I hope it's the latter!

Thanks in anticipation...

P.S. Any X owners near me...PE6?

The 09 Xcountry and the Xmote/Xchallenge have different part numbers for the throttle cable. The Xcountry one is 850mm (46 51 7 708 836 ACCELERATOR CABLE - L=850MM) and the xmoto/xchallenge one is 890mm long (32 73 7 696 788 ACCELERATOR CABLE - L=890MM). Do you have the correct cable?

The MaxBMW fiche for the 07 XCountry doesn't show the throttle cable from what I could see.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've checked against a new cable and they are exactly the same length, i.e. it's not a stretched cable. Also, though the Challenge and Moto cables are longer overall, the difference betweeen the inner and outer should be the same for all three bikes as the throttle tube and throttle body assemblies are the same.

So I've re-installed the cable and eliminated the excesive play by only screwing it into the throttle tube housing 2-3 threads and using about 3/4 of 'the' adjuster (the mid-adjuster you mention(?), as there's no adjustment at the throttle body bracket). I'm only treating this as a temporary fix as I think this leaves the throttle tube connection vulnerable.

I plan to run like this for a while and if everything seems OK I'll fabricate a custom bracket to take up the estimated 6-8mm excess. Then at least I know standard cables will fit.

It'd be nice to know how other X's are set up...

Throttle tube play (recommended 2-3mm)?
No. of threads showing at throttle tube housing?
No. of threads showing at cable adjuster?

Cheers, Paul

Look under the left side panel to where the throttle cable fits to the injector ... there's a knurled nut for taking up the free play. I think you can get to it without taking the top plastic panel off ;)

Is there two different tracks on the throttlebody spindle drum that the cable attaches to?

Yes, the shorter (nearer) one is for restricting the bike for the learner laws .... you can't, quite simply, get full throttle. If it's been changed from one to t'other it could result in a slack cable if it hadn't been adjusted

Sorry guys I forgot to finish this off, I hate it when threads peter out before a conclusion!
I 'fixed' my bike by adding a half-nut, with a slot cut in it to get it over the inner cable, on the throttle body end of the outer cable just before the bracket. This enabled me to adjust the cable just so without the adjuster being wound right out. It's still quite straight to the throttle tube on the bars but allows full lock without raising the revs..
If I have to change it, I might investigate a custom cable, or a Moto/XCh cable, as a longer cable seems desirable
