Richie,

For the install yes.

If you have it installed somewhere I have a little utility that will extract the key so that you can write it down somewhere safe.

terribly useful little thing, attached below...

Just spotted that one. Cheers yes I do have it installed on a puter I sold to a mate. I think I have also got the number back. Indeed I know I have an XP Pro number and am pretty sure its the right one.

Or can someone tell me that it will work..

Meaning that as its a correct number it will work with any XP Pro in English

cd key should only be used on one pc at a time, in fact if it's the OEM xp it should only ever be installed on the one original pc. this might be picked up if your version needs MS product activation*. if it doesn't, it's a "corporate" copy & needs a VLK (volume licence key). if you use the wrong key ie. the 20 or so common keys MS has blacklisted, you will not be able to get windows updates.

you can change the key after install though if you have the right tools.

*it won't if the last activation was more than 160 days ago.

BTW xp never came on a dvd ;)

er, lets just say I got hold of a DVD version...

That would probably be a Microsoft Developer Network (or Technet Plus) version. They are, and I'm happy to be corrected here, valid for 120 days on up to five machines at a time, when used for development and testing - I haven't read the licence agreement in detail for some time...

I don't know how older versions of MSDN versions of software respond to being upgraded via the Windows Update site, service packs or patches. I think Microsft have recently released new versions of these, incorporating XPSP2 with new numbers.

DISCLAIMER - All this could be bollox. Your mileage may vary. These are not the androids you are looking for. Bears constipated.
