XP Home with SP2.

For some reason my computer 'hangs up' sometimes when shutting down.

This is a fairly recent thing, about half the time it shuts down correctly and has been happening for about four weeks now.

I exit out of all files etc. close the Broadband link, select shutdown from the menu and I get the shutting down MS bing-bong audible.

The blue screen, Windows is shutting down comes up, then freezes.

My CPU has a power switch on the front for start up. This can be used to shut down without using the Windows menu but I never use it for that. Once it freezes in shut down, this button doesn't work.

There is also a re-boot button and a main power switch on the CPU.

When it freezes, the re-boot works and will re-start the PC in the normal way, taking me through the log-on menu etc.

The only methods to close it down fully when it freezes are either keep re-booting and going back through the shut down menu until it accepts the procedure fully or switch off the main power switch at the rear.

This is more annoying than critical, I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and more concerned that it's an indication of some impending major melt-down?

If you hold the power switch for 5 or 6 seconds you should find it powers off.

Shut down issues are usually a process/service failing or refusing to stop when told.

Have you run a GOOD antivirus program (NOD32 or AVG are my recommendations) and spyware scan? (Microsofts beta is pretty good). These sort of 'infections' can cause shut down problems.

Updates

XP (Microsoft) automatically checks for and install any updates for your system. It does this in the background while you're online, if you haven't schedule it to do it at some other time.
XP wouldn't close until all the upgrades have been downloaded and installed.
If you turn off the update function, you'll find that you can shutdown without delay.

Its was usually spyware that stopped mine I use Ad-Aware and don't have problems anymore. It picks up things the Microsoft Beta one misses (and visa versa).

Cheers everyone.

I've got the ad-aware stuff loaded and found 90+ nasties beavering away!

Just tried shutting down and it worked ok, so far!

Thanks again for the help.
