I had this exact same problem with my Montana 700i a couple of years ago. Without boring everyone to death with the excuses Garmin spewed out week after week, it was eventually confirmed by Garmin that the issue was the mapping software version conflicting with the device software. They said they could fix it if I paid them a few hundred pounds more for a different version of the software but as I was using the default software installed on the device at the time of purchase I declined their generous offer and instead opted for a refund.

When you say 'mapping software' do you mean the City Navigator maps?
And did they say which version by any chance?

No it was the OS software which was the problem. I can never remember which is which but the default version of OS Maps which was installed conflicted with the device firmware. Garmin suggested that if I bought the more detailed OS Maps version the issue would no longer present itself. You didn’t have to be using OS Maps for the unit to shut down, it would shut down even if you were using City Navigator, it was simply the fact that I had the version of OS maps installed which I did, but that’s how it came from Garmin. Unfortunately I cannot recall which version of OS Maps it was, other than it was whatever OS had out approximately two years ago. If you contact OS they’ll probably be able to advise what the version was back then.
