Adventurous Routing.

…… mild edit……

My regular group of bike trip friends have all gone for the XT (and XT2 does it too) for this great feature.

I have also bitten the bullet for the XT. With adventurous routing you can create routes on the fly, you don't need to import GPX files using software applications.
You can also share the created routes with others using Bluetooth.

From experience the XT creates interesting routes using Adv routing as long as you turn off motorways/toll roads, Auto recalculate in settings and there is a reasonable distance to your destination.
Over shorter distances you will find it takes you down very minor roads. Over longer distances e.g. St Malo - Vannes 160 Km or further if you like it can create very good routes.

The piece de resistance is the slide bar, you can adjust your arrival time and twisty roads using the slide bar to fit with how much time you have to get there.
I dare say Adventurous routing is similar to curvy roads but using the slide bar allows a better user experience.

How to use/set up a route for Adventurous routing:-
Make sure you turn off motorways/toll roads & Auto recalculate. From Home screen go to Apps --> Trip Planner --> New Trip --> Select Start location ("Where I am now") --> Select Destination (once selected) --> Next --> Adventurous routing --> this brings up the map window with the slide bar which you can adjust for twisties or time to destination --> then select Save.

If you have an XT have a play with this, very useful when away and your plans change.

======

I have started you a fresh thread for this feature.

I use that a lot, when I want a run out and can't be bothered to plot a route.

I suppose that’s great if you are ok with the device deciding where you’re riding. I prefer to decide for myself which way I’m going.

The feature certainly serves a purpose.

Not least it helps bods who post: “I’m going to be in XYZ” and “I’m going DEF from ABC” and want none motorway, twisty routes.

Some will hate it. Some will love it and some will not even know how to turn it on.

Thanks Richard, I also have the same mind set as glen2926 I still like to plan a route via Basecamp. And yeah some will love it others will not, however this feature is useful and does work well IMHO :)

Do you actually own an XT? I do own an XT and mostly plan my routes on MRA, but if you're going from A to B and just want a quick way of doing a route, it works well.

Comes in useful when you see a good road on Google and I use the adventure feature to make the ride to the start interesting. It's handy for unplanned rideouts.

It would be much more appreciated by me if they could return the "faster" routing algorithm to where it worked out a route that took the shortest time, aka fastest rather than one which decides to make the priority of using faster roads.

Which is fine. But this thread is all about the ‘Adventure routing’ option.

There’s plenty of other threads about the device’s odd A to B routing.

I have edited up the thread, moving the ‘I don’t want to use MyRoute’ posts into a new thread in the MyRoute section. Likewise the posts about maps on a 660.

Richard

PS Let’s try to keep it near enough about the ‘Adventurous Routing’ option on the Garmin XT and / or XT2.

I was on a camping trip in France just wandering a general direction and with no time pressure was using the ADV feature ,,, it gave us some very interesting routes from decent link up bits to nearly goat tracks ,,, I was only using it when the weather was good and there was no rush !

Rather like the ‘Wiggly’ routes lobbed out by Kurviger, it can be a good idea to have a short review of any third party generated route…. Before riding off towards the horizon.

It isn’t difficult to build routes on the actual device itself ,, but , ( imho ) you need either a paper map or an iPad to get the over view to put the points where they need to go , screen is a bit small unless it’s a very straightforward route .

Indeed, but the OP’s opening post is about having the device create something for the rider to (hopefully) enjoy, rather than the rider create it themselves. Will the suggested routes always be perfect? No. Might they sometimes embrace a goat track or a few miles of ‘well boring’ dual carriageway? Possibly, yes.

My suggestion to bods…. Try it out. It’s free, at least.

The Adventurous routing is more about letting the device take you there, It will create a reasonably interesting route, you can add waypoints but really dont need to.

For example If you were travelling from Nantes to St Malo and have to be there for a set time, maybe to catch the ferry, you can instruct the XT with your set avoidances to go from wherever you are in Nantes to go to St Malo.
During the process of creating the route the slide bar screen appears that displays the offered route (on a map) and arrival time, If that time is too late you can adjust the slide bar to give a more favourable ETA, This changes the route to a less twisty more direct route the more you move the slide bar the more direct the route and better arrival time. But better arrival time will mean more dual carriageways.

But if you are not in a hurry no worries. We tend to pick a town half way to our destination and create a route to there, have lunch, then create another one to the destination, judging the timescales with the slidebar.

I have planned a 160 mile rideout with this method for my little trip to Belgium in May. Will report back on how it worked.
