Woaah hold on a cotton pickin' minute!

Is that a PLASTIC bashplate?!!

Would get one in a minute. How many of the big four are thinking they should have got off their arses and got something out there to compete with the teutonic barge:P

KTM's are expensive and reliability/complexity is an issue.
Pluck.

Where do you get the idea that KTM's are unreliable ?

I've had 9 ranging from a 250 right up to a 990 with most models in between.

I had a clutch cable go on a Duke years ago and a head gasket 'fail' on my 950 Adv,but it still kept going fine-other than that, nothing !

KTM build quality is superb, certainly better than BMW.

The forthcoming 690 Adv should be brilliant,as the 690 motor is the most powerful single in production,as well as being so smooth.

Mated to KTM know-how/Dakar experience, the bike will blow rivals away, certainly the Tenere, even though it's not a bad effort from Yamaha.

Fair-do's. I thought I'd sensed that some people thought KTM's are potentially a bit 'flighty' - but I'm happy to be wrong.

and the KTM 690 Adventure will blow it away on all levels when it is launched soon

...all levels - including cost :P

So are a lot of other manufacturers :)

I think the point I was trying to make was that as much as I drool over KTM's - I think they may be a bit too 'focussed' for what I'm looking for, if you know what I mean, plus expensive. I'd love a 990 but I'd be paranoid about smashing it up and it would change the way I rode. It's a weird one actually, because the one bike that is probably the best suited to overlanding on - I wouldn't want take because I'd be so proud of it I wouldn't want to feck it up! Anyway I'm rambling. I want something cheapish, simple and reliable - something that I won't care about if I drop it 100 times a day, and something that won't break if I drop it 100 times a day. It would need to last an entire trip, or be able to be fixed at the side of the road with a hammers. Something like the DRZ and maybe this new Yammie would seem to fit the bill...

Chains have come along way. Good quality o-ring chains can be ridden dry and don't stretch much at all. And how much is a BMW shaft when it's out of warranty...

The problem here is Yamaha have never made a light big bike and they aren't going to start with this one. It looks like budget suspension with a big heavy steel frame.

If I'm right in saying this is the injection motor they use on the other 660 then it'll be very economical, up with the BMW 650 at 60mpg+.

The DRZ is a poor mans KTM. If I could afford a decent KTM 640 Adv without taking out fecking finance I probably would.

The new yamaha (and all BMW's for that matter) has shit budget suspension. The KTM and DRZ come with high-end suspension out the box.

Personally I'd say go for a cheap 640 2nd. There is a reason why everybody rides them and if you go for a DRZ you'll spend fooking ages sourcing all the cushy parts to make it into a tourer. I'm on 6 months and still waiting on stuff to arrive/be made/to source and if you get it wrong it spells disaster (as I found out on my aborted Morocco trip).

So what will this new Yam do that a GS 650 Dakar can't :nenau

It looks like a plastic KTM with a Yamaha badge: I reckon it will steal more sales from KTM than BMW, if only for cost and reliabilty.

I got shut of my 1150 Adv and bought a XT660r.
It's a very good bike, does 80mpg has a better light than the BMW and the KTM 640 Adv ,and is mile's better off road than the BMW,but not as good as the KTM .
But the XT660r ran perfect above 2600 meter's were the KTM had a big loss of power.
and best of all It cost 3,500 pound's new .

But please I don't want to see all you Tosser's on them :hide

man, looks like that thing hit every branch in the ugly tree on the way down. Didn't think it was possible tomake a bike look that ugly
