Y peice. Are they worth it?

Are they really worth it?
Depends whether or not you actually like very very loud granny scaring backfires every time you roll off the gas from medium to high revs. Pissed me off so much I sold my Y-piece and put the cat back on :thumb2
Nah, save your money and just whip the end can off, leave the Cat on and stick the Steptoe Mod© on and your laughing.:thumb2
+1 And it sounds just as good if not better IMHO :thumb2

Bought my Y-piece from bike shop in Bedford selling them on e-bay for about £95 -main difference seems to be the weight loss as no very discernible power advantage - does pop when closing the throttle, amount seems to vary depending on fuel and has got better over time (interestingly recently travelled through France and Spain and Morocco and don't recall it popping once - thought had been cured after service beforehand, but on return to Blighty has started doing it again).

Popping! Popping! Don't you mean sounding like a shot gun going off at close range? :D

Depends on the quality of your earplugs I guess! But yes, I concede, it does scare small animals and children at times! :mmmm

Having just gone down the road of removing the Y-piece and replacing with a full Remus system, perhaps I can add a bit here..

first off the front (Y-piece) is fairly easy to fit, anyone who has a little mechanical ability should be OK..be carefull unplugging the Lambda sensors though, they come apart quite easily!

drop off the 'can' and then disconnect the front section, watch out with the strap that goes around the Cat, I undid mine completely and the Y-piece came away without to much hassle.

the Remus Y-piece bolted on very easily, the quality was pretty good, although having had them before I can say that they discolour pretty quickly! need to keep on top of them with some Autosol.

Fitting the can...Hmmmm, well I got the can bolted on and did that standing back and adimiring my handy work...great I thought...must go a ride it to see what it sounds like...sounded bloody loud in the garage, and not wanting to gas myself...I thought it best to do a road test...

after about 40 miles or so of rolling off the throttle and then gassing back up i decided that I liked the noise, reminded me of the 1200 racing at Le Mans this year...(a bike that could be heard above all the screaming fours) cue the best comedy moment for ages...I had not noticed that you should also fit the metal insert from the original can...this spaces the can out by 10mm or, if you dont fit it, you do what I did...you melt your number plate and blow hot molten plastic all over the back of your shinny bike:blast:blast spacer in all good...new number plate as well.

as for power increase etc...well its like this..it sounds faster, seems to have a bit more drive after 6000rpm, and is a lot lighter than the stock system, I got my brother to ride it up and down the road, did a couple of slow passes and a proper fly by, just to see if it was properly loud...it was a bit on the fruity side when pulling hard, but if you potter along its not offensive at all.

my bike has only got 2000 miles on it, so its not anywhere near loose yet (my old GS didnt loosen up until it had 15000 on the clock) so performance wise I realy dont think its much different to stock, as I said above just feels like it tugs a bit harder at 6000rpm..

hope that all helps...FW

Y piece, best mod for a GS. I can't understand anyone with a GS not having one!.............Did I mention that I have one for sale?:o

So after all that ive fitted a second hand Remus end can, the steptoe mod and the y piece, did anyone else find idle (and warming up) up impossible?
Also reving to 2000revs is jerky and spastic,
and 3500-4000 rangy (like on off on off) top end is great. Its just I cant motor around town at 6000revs all that well!
Would a service do it or does it need remapping?

What spacer:eek:

Is this for a 1200?

look where the can bolts to the frame, inside the rubber mount there is a metal insert pushed through the rubber mount....thats the spacer i'm on about. Cant really miss it...if you do its melting number plate and indicator time..

Just called Cannon in Braintree to book the bike in to have one fitted. The mechanic strongly suggested that I didn't have one fitted as it "causes flat spots in the mid-range" - the only cure being a power commander type affair.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Been running all year with a Remus end can on my 12 no probs. However just fitted the Y piece on prior to a trip to France and I'm convinced that it no longer pulls cleanly in the mid range. Around 5-6000 rpm now seems very fluffy. Prior to the Y piece I would often hit the rev limiter, sometimes on 3-4 gears in a row (still not used to low reving twins after my screaming fours) however 1200 miles through France at often excessive speeds never saw e on the limiter once? Seems fast enough, clocking 134mph on the GPS and although there is some back fire on the over run it's nothing like what I expected. Love the way it sounds like some old byplane when on full chat.
Should I fit a K&N filter and what is this Steptoe mod of which you speak?

Me too please!

Steptoe, or someone else, can you link us to a thread?

Am also thinking of getting a Y piece and mention of holed pistons and shitty performance have me worried.

Wouldn't even mind running by Steptoe, and greasing your palm to sort it for me...
