Just fitted a Y piece and revolution can.
Had to put shorter bolts in the footrest hanger and a couple a washers between the can bracket and hanger in order to get clearance. But, the BMW pannier is touching the can, so the only solution I can see is to put some spacers between the footrest hanger and the subframe to bring it out a bit, I think about 3/8".
Also a bit of sticky back heat insulation stuff would be nice If I could source some?

Dont know of any other solutions..but someone must have had this problem too?

Oh My God! Now I AM worried. With the Y piece and can it means you will be going even FASTER when you have to start skidding to a halt for these 'unseen' junctions! Should be even more spectacular!!
:D :D :D

Can't think of anything to help with you problem, other than the sticky backed foil stuff for going on the wall behind domestic radiators to reflect more heat into the room, available from DIY places - but this may not be 'man enough' for the job. It may cheer you up to know that Ian and I got absolutely soaked riding back from Kinlochewe to Newcastle last Wednesday. A canoe would have been better suited to the conditions than a bike !!

Certainly isn't....I've got a roll downstairs and it's rated to 60 degrees c........The foamy stuff it's lined with melts and shrivels at comparatively low temps.

PS I don't wish to worry you any further but I had and still have the exact same problem........See THIS THREAD for scary details.......

I'm still trying to sort it..I've tried a wudo lowering kit to ake the zoerst UNDER the pannier but the fekker doesn't fit.....the only solution I can see is to weld on a foor of 1.25 inch ID pipe to the end of the baffle (but i run without mine  ) to take the gas out the back of the pannier rails.

PITA!!!!!

I have the same set-up as this but have no problems with the fit, ie. melting etc.

It sounds like there's may be a problem (with the shape of the 'Y' piece?)..

Ian,
Had the same problem with Georgia's R1150R (Same system ) Spent a bit of time simply playing about with alignment and got it sorted in the end.

MM......any more info???

I've just been out to have a look and I cant see how I can change anything alignment wise.......the 'y' piece is attached at four points....two of which are the points it connects to the down-pipes so fair enough, they could slide on or off more or less which would pivot the 'y', but behind that it fixes at both ends of a cross piece which would stop this pivotting movement.

From what I can see the only way I could change the angle of the box itself is to bend the tube in out out AFTER that cross piece mounting......

Fanum,
Yep y piece is fixed as you say. I would imagine as I did that most people would then slip on silencer fasten rear mount to sub frame then tighten clamp over y/silencer joint.
I did this with Georgia's and found that silencer touched pannier
I slackened clamp, removed rear bolt then twisted silencer anti clockwise (looking from rear) until I got the angle/clearance I wanted then tightened silencer joint.
Problem now was rear bracket was low & had gap between subframe.
Didnt want to stress silencer mount so removed rear silencer bracket, enlarged holes(material out from wheel side) to allow bracket to take up gap, refitted with 2mm washer's under bracket to get correct height for subframe mount, problem solved.

Hope you can follow this as the Miller's going down well.

I've ended up with 2 of the BwM heatshields on my pannier, one near the front and the other just at the point of the exhaust endcap. I've now done over 2500 miles ( including a 250 mile at 85mph non stop motorway blast ) with no problems.

Thats exactly what I have done, plus added the Remus extension piece, (overpriced I know) but thats what they recommend anyway. My view is that ok its overpriced but what price is it to replace a melted pannier?
Plus, as I think Metal man has suggested, its a lot to do with alignment. When I fitted mine the can was touching the footrest hanger, I then spent a couple of hours trying to tweak it to give me some more clearance.
IMHO adding spacers will make it worst because it will tend to rotate the can and therefore force the bottom edge closer to the pannier.
Spend some time trying to realign it on the Y-piece in order to give you the clearance. I actually cut a small wedge of wood and put that in between the can and the hanger bracket to stop it all moving while I tightened the bolts up.
Then remove the wooden wedge and you should be able to achieve at least a 10-15 mm gap in between the panniers and the zorst.

Hmmmm.....Thanks MM & BTBR.....I did try and move the can with spacers etc but must admit I didn't loosen off that joint......was a bit worried I'd end up with a leak and backfires.

TBH still can't see that this is going to get me anywhere near the position that will make the wudo kit fit but i'll give it a go this w/end.

My can acutually comes offa the Y piece at an angle which makes the end foul the footrest hanger I've tweaked it a bit and it now clears it but I cant get the panier on.
I'm gonna get some spacers on the hanger and pannier rail to bring the pannier right ou to give me a good bit of 'air' between.
Also got a mate trying to source some sticky back heat stuff for me...he's good at that sorta thing.
Will post pics if I'm successful.

Like I say if you add a 2mm spacer (for example) it forces the lower edge of the can out by more, therefore making it a lot worse.
It also does not help that the can is oval.

Regarding backfiring, when I had the OE can and y-piece it backfired like a good 'un. Then I fitted the Remus can as well and spent some time sealing the joints and to date it has not backfired once.....shame really!!

I put the spacers under the silencer bracket, this doesnt alter can angle it simply raises bracket to the height I required.

Ian, Just a thought, does the pannier fit when silencer removed?
Your bike went down on l/h side.. maybe frame loop slightly bent?

I had trouble fitting l/h pannier on Georgia's R850R and my GS1150.. Both bought new and never crashed.. swapped pillion footrest plates from one bike to the other and panniers fitted ok  Ever more confused.... :(

New rear subframe and foot rest hangers, and footpegs so cant be that.
Fits ok with standard set up, rode 70 miles with panniers on and no probs.
Ah the joys of bmw ownership:confused:

Ian - it's just a plot to stop you fitting non-BM kit to the bike! Maybe you'll have to get the TT Ali panniers instead - you won't melt them, just the contents!

Regards,

Charles
