Yamaha xt500 cira 1980

The Neval is 40yrs old not worth a lot of money. The work to convert to 12v, add a leccy leg to a machine with really poor handling and even worse brakes makes zero sense. 45mph is all you can safely ride at with those brakes. But I'm only taking it out to shows locally
I'm not riding it very much at all
I'll have a play with the xt500 and see what I can do
 
Many years ago I did a season as a passenger on a xt500 scrambles outfit 😲 great fun but boy do you have to be fit !!
 
Had this gorgeous 250 25 years ago, bought it from a farm on a mountain in Wales and rode it home to Southampton, 6 hours is a lot easier on my GSA.
I had one of those. I bought it brand new straight out of the crate with my hard earned boy soldier wages, against my parents wishes. Most of the other lads went for RD250s. However, at weekends I’d be off riding on the training areas, memories. Now, it would probably be easier to find hens teeth than a good XT250.
 
I bought one last year. I’ve owned many in the past. I’ve been fettling it over winter. I’ve just come back from a trail ride. I removed all the original lights and so on and fitted a TY trials light set I’d had squirreled away. Home made wiring loom. Lots of fun. Feel free to ask questions.

Yeap well done, alas I'm 70yrs but 7yrs into Parkinson's disease and 15yrs into diabetes .PD has done my balance in so I'm only able to ride three wheels.
It's been a struggle with DVLA to keep my drivers licence

Well I've gone and tripped over a 1980 V reg historic class Yamaha xt500
It was a bike I'd always wanted in the 80s, but never got to own
Until NOW
Needs a bit of fettling, after coming out of storage
I'm going to have a little bit of FUN
Will I actually ride it
NO ( my balance is crap) at 70yrs with medical issues
But
I'll get it sorted and see what's about later
Always fancied one of these, like many others, hence the increase in prices of late, Seen one that looks interesting for sale on Gummy, may well be an investment to made for someone.

 
Now that's VERY expensive in my eyes
My xt500 was a personal import to UK by its original owner when he moved to the UK in 1998

Seems VERY expensive in my eyes!
I think a realistic price on an xt500 is approx £5k for a decent one
£7500 plus seems outrageous to me
But I'm an old guy I 😂
By the time I've sorted out mine Its probably going to owe me £5k but that's not the point
It's my therapy / hobby
Recommissioning is time
I've got plenty of time 😂😂

I agree overpriced, I suppose the seller can always drop the price if a reasonable offer was made.
I would estimate right price for a good example around £5k, like you mentioned, as much as I always liked them, not sure I could go back to one and using as a daily runner, certainly no use for touring with, tanks too small.
But as a long term project it should be a fun build, forgetting costs involved the enjoyment in a re build is the reward.
Have fun in your xt500 project, please keep us all informed how its going from time to time as well.
