I finally gathered all my courage in one place and successfully performed a servoectomy on my 2003 1150GSA and the brakes seem better than ever - the precipitating symptoms were lack of faith in the things, frustration at how boring it was to change fluids, the constant whine from the servo and most importantly a most horrible graunchy/grinding noise when applying the rear brake that subsequently spread to the front.....all much better now:blagblah

My question is - I'd quite like to take the abs ring off the front wheel. Do I need any washers/spacers to cope withe extra gap or can I get away without? I think I need something just by looking, has anyone got experience of this and what did you do?

n yes you do needthe correct thickness washer get some measured up good luck safe riding:thumb

Logic would lean towards fitting a spacer the same thickness as the ABS ring.

However, the mounting parts for the Non ABS appear from the parts catalogue to be exactly the same as those for ABS. There is no difference in the length of the securing bolt or the thickness of the disc. This kind of leads towards being able to remove the ABS ring and refitting the disc using the same mounting parts. (identical to the right disc assembly).

The test will be to see if there is any binding on the calipers after reassembly. There is about 4 to 5 mm gap either side of the disc, between the disc and the calipers.

Try it. Refit the left disc as per the right disc assembly. You will have pushed the pads and pistons back on caliper removal. Refit the calipers and before you pump the brakes, Spin the wheel to see if there is any contact between disc and calipers.

Servo/ABS removal

My google-fu is weak and I can't find any info on this procedure... anyone got a link?

I suspect it might not be beyond my mechanical skills to do this but waaay beyond my courage level. It sounds like the sort of job for "me and a knowledgeable mate" but lets see whats involved first, before officially wimping out.

Regards

Bill

Hope this helps (and the link works - not so clever with 'puters)

I did the job following these instructions, very straight forward.... Just take your time and hold your nerve:beerjug:

I also bought (not strictly needed, but thought it would make my life easier) a front brake pipe link thingy from Motoworks - phone em up, I get the impression they've sold a few and will know what you're asking for.
