Yet another ipod question

A mate is getting an ipod of his wife for Christmas.

As a present I'd like to load up a pile of my music on it for him so it's on it when he unwraps it on Christmas day.

All my music is ripped and not bought via itunes.

It's all on an external hard drive.

I have a laptop with it all on as well which I use with itunes to sync my ipod.

I have another laptop that I could install a clean version of itunes on.

I have no access to his computer as it's a surprise for him.

Whats the best way of doing this so that the ipod isn't wiped clean the 1st time he loads itunes on his pc and plugs the ipod in?

I think the only way is for him to ensure that he has auto syncing turned off.

In iTunes >

Edit > Preferences > Devices > Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically.

So you can get the music on to his iPod for him no probs. Get a cheap memory stick/dongle thingy and put the same music on that for him, so when he's up'n running, and his initial surprise is over, he can download that same music in to his iTunes library?

Put them on the iPod, and also burn them all on to a DVD.

Gift them together.

Then he can install all the tunes in to itunes and therefore they will not get deleted.......

It's an idea, I think I'll add a note saying not to sync it and I'll take my external drive to his place and stick the music on his pc after Christmas. Simple really, just needed thinking out logically

edit: I'll be sticking 70 gig of tunes on it so sticks and dvd's are out

could you not use the home sharing function on iTunes to share the toons between your machine and your pals, then maybe the iPod won't be scrubbed first time it's plugged in ?

load the ipod and put a note in with it saying the above. email him an app to transfer music to his pc on christmas day.

however, if he's a techno-numpty, i think your hand applied external drive scheme would take a lot of beating

did a weebit of reading on this and I was talking pish but this maybe of help, it all depends on what iPod he's getting but he jist of it is using the iPod as an external drive to copy files over to a new computer

I used MediaMonkey on my laptop to bung tunes onto my ipod, but it didn't like operating on the same platform as I-tunes (sync for e-mails/apps etc).

I now use the home PC with MediaMonkey for tunes, and laptop with Itunes for everything else.

Anyone else had that problem with MediaMonkey?

Media monket do state on there website that MM and iTunes don't work well on the same system, but there working on it.

a bit off topic but I just can't get on with MM I think it's very old fashioned in it's use, it's like real player from 10yrs ago.
