At the risk of boring everyone again with tales of woe about batteries and having recently posted concerning the aforementioned, I find myself once again imploring my fellow GS riders to supply me some crucial information.

1.Does the battery lead with the red rubbery cap always connect to the positive terminal of the battery ? Having disconnected my battery a few days ago to attempt to charge the ******g thing, I have become unsure.........
2.It appears that my battery was put in back to front i.e with the terminals facing the back of the bike.......the instruction manual shows the terminals facing the front with the lead (with the red rubbery cap) on the right hand side (as you sit on the bike).
Could anyone shed any light on this as I am about to reconnect (In the vain hope that the battery has held some charge !!!) and do not wish to fry the wiring loom.

By the way if anyone is interested I have a website, not about bikes but restoring vintage ww1 aircraft which I do part time. http://www.mikerlewis.com

Oh. I'm in trouble. . Just been stopped a weeks wages . :D

can you tell me if this is from a ww1 aircraft.......possibly somesort of rev counter drive...the ratio is 2:1.........its from an hispano suiza engine or box....wm geipel & co.150HP......Mark IVA......steve:beerjug:

tacho drive

It looks like a tachometer drive, 150 HP probably means an aero engine, if it was from ww1 it might also have driven the machine gun interrupter gear , this was certainly the case with the German aircraft of the period. Tacho drives were taken straight from the engine i.e 1:1 if this is 2:1 then it may have served another purpose.
Ask me about Benz IVu engines and I can supply all the answers.....Hispano Suiza engines are not my particular forte but I hope I have tried to answer your question.

Apologies for straying off topic.

batteries

Do aeroplanes have batteries? if so which way round do they go, and if you are flying and find the battery is on backwards, does this create reverse thrust?

ask a silly question.........

Yes I know that the red lead should go to the positive terminal post and my original question does sound a little naive but what I was really trying to ask (not very well as it turned out) was : "Is it possible that the leads could have been assembled wrongly when the bike was being prepared for its initial sale to me from new by the BMW agent."
Many thanks for the "Humorous invective"
I suppose it is a case of "Ask a silly question........etc":blast

I suspect that part of the reason that you're asking is because you're used to working on machines which were made before proper standards arose.

The red should indeed be the +12V, and the black should be the ground. It is extremely unlikely that they are different, but it's very, very slightly possible. However, if you trace where the black wire goes, it'll very obviously attach to the frame or another chunk of the bike or engine, and that wire, whatever the colour, will be the ground.
