Hi Guys,

Seeing as the forecast was good for today I thought it would be good to have the day off and have a nice little day trip, after ringing round some friends they all had to work ( how sad!!:D) So I was "flying solo" for the day and decided to take the camera along as when I'm riding with the group we don't normally bother to take pics.
So I shot off on my Tod along towards Richmond North Yorkshire and headed in the direction of Hawes on the A684, just before I turned off on the B6160 to Kettlewell you could see Castle Bolton peeking over the dry stone wall :hide

The road climbs up towards Cray and starts to get very scenic, great to stop and have a look at where you have just come from!

This little waterfall just before the White Lion Inn at Cray is fed by Bishopdale Beck

I rode on the next few miles through Buckden, Starbottom and Kettlewell, then took an unclassified road on the right signposted to Litton

More cracking scenery in Litton Valley
P1020348.jpg

After a few miles you get to a tiny little place called Halton Gill and the road takes a very sharp left and starts to climb up Fountains Fell on its way to Settle - this is the view as you climb up from Halton Gill
P1020351.jpg

The view out to your left hand side of Litton Valley is stunning!

You are surrounded by massive rock formations like this, dead impressive!
P1020353.jpg

In about 10 miles or so, this tiny road spits you out near Settle and I hung a right and headed up the B6479 Horton in Ribblesdale road, fantastic fast, well surface curvy road this, so I pulled the pin and it was Hammer Time!!!:thumb2
P1020357.jpg

After a great blast up this road it brings you out at the Ribblehead Viaduct, hang a right and you have another fantastic 10 miles or so of some great riding roads, very fast swooping curves that lead you up into Hawes - Yee Haw!! time for the 1,000 yard stare :eek

Now we normally stop at the Penny Garth cafe for grub, but there was too many of those "Ruffy-Tuffy" bikers for my liking :toungincheek, so I felt like treating myself to a visit around the corner to the Wensleydale cheese factory and tea room.
P1020361.jpg

If any of you guys like cheese, you would love this place, they have a shop that sells masses of the stuff!!
P1020362.jpg

Great choice of cakes in the tea room - I love cakes me :)
P1020363.jpg

Finally decide on a Latte and a Paradise Slice - Yom-Yom!! didn't touch the sides on the way down!

Out of Hawes on the A684 towards Sedbergh and then took a right turn onto the B6259 across Mallerstang Common towards Kirkby Stephen, when just past Outhgill I came across these ruins - Pendragon Castle, built in the 12th Century ( needs the pointing doing now mind! )
P1020367.jpg

On through Kirkby Stephen and Brough and I took the B6276 towards Middleton in Teessdale which runs past Selset and Grassholme reservoirs, when it struck me just how lucky I was today :-
"Its October, its 14 deg C and sunny, the roads are dry and I'm on a 990 SMT and I have the B6276 in front of me with no traffic on it to demolish!! - Oh Happy Day!! :JB "
P1020368.jpg

Arty farty shot just above Grassholme Reservoir, now my little Excitable Hyper mate normally blasts past me on his Fireblade here, but he's always on the wrong side of 120 so I don't feel too bad about it :comfort
P1020372.jpg

This road then spits you out into Middleton in Teesdale, this is the view looking back
P1020374.jpg

A fuzzy self timer shot ( need more practice! ) of me wondering where my next pie is gonna come from :drool

From here I made my way back through the teeming metropolis of Bishop Auckland and back to home near Yarm.
A great ride out with fantastic weather for this time of year, nice 170 mile round trip, and somehow I always enjoy a ride like this even better when I know that everyone else is still stuck at work!! Selfish, .."Moi!":D:D

Cheers,

Poucher

Nice report Poucher, I'm very jealous.:thumb

That makes our roads down south seem shite!:blast

I CANNOT wait to ride again. Nice looking bike BTW.:rob

Looks like a great day out. :thumb2

I had to cancel 2 trips to Yorkshire over the last few years because the place sank!! I finally made it about 18 months ago and it rained non stop for the 5 days with zilch visibility.

Its reassuring to know that it does stop raining sometimes:augie

Nice, did pretty much the same route in reverse last Saturday... only it was a lot, lot busier :(

That's a lovely part of GB. I've been round there a couple of times and always love going back. Love the SM-T. :thumb2 Quite fancied buying one, but after the demo ride, I knew I'd lose my license within the first month as I don't have that much self restraint.

Nice photos, great biking roads, went to Bolton Castle the other day for a wedding, got to venue from Leyburn on Hawes creamery routemaster with small detour via Aysgarth falls, missing low bridges very good day in deed.

It's what riding is all about - good countryside, good weather & time on your hands.

I just can't believe you want to ride fast in countryside like that, though. It's too good to hurry through in my sad old git opinion..

Good point Reverend, but I don't blast through all of it, there are however certain parts of that route that I defy anyone to ride slowly, like the Ribblehead viaduct road up to Hawes - one of my faves :thumb2

Just looking at the pics again, I'm slightly disappointed at my bloomin camera, they were all supposed to be the same size as the first pic and somehow its sized them down to 640 x 480, doesn't do the scenery justice really.

Bl00dy Panasonic TZ5, I'm just not impressed with it, either that or I've got it set wrong or something

Anyhow, pleased you guys liked the pics, and I know I'm dead lucky having all this beautiful scenery and fantastic roads in my back yard, I think I passed about 8 cars today when I was in the wilds and that's it!

Nice report and good pics. Definately some great roads around that area, I might even give them a blast myself tomorrow or sunday.
Cheers:thumb

Nice pics, shame to spoil some of them with that KTM in the way though ;)

Just the one cake then? :homer

Good ride report, it does make a change to see the scenery rather than passing through at 'some' mph.

Dan,

Show some respect boy!, that's no way to talk to your Father in Law :rob

:D:D

Looks like you enjoyed riding around "my back garden" :beerjug::D

There are some great rides around Settle, not only up into the Dales, but also into both the trough and forest of Bowland. Not as well known as the Dales but some great roads

If you want an interesting ride next time, why not go up from Hawes to Thwait then Keld, turn off up to Tan Hill (Englands highest pub), then off to Kirkby Steven where you can either go off across country to the Lakes (via Shap) or down across country through Dent and Ingleton back to the A65 :D

Settle, Hawes and A65. Loads of sports bikes at weekends , with lots of police

Enjoy Yorkshire and Ride Safe :friday

You didn't say how many times you had to stop and and fill up that fuel tank?;)

As you know TOM ( :D ) it only uses a couple of quid more than yours, it likes a bit of a drink :jager
