Eric Hall My dealer had a rear wheel with some busted spokes for sale. I guess the work they did on a bike led to the failure; it was their fault. I think something on the rear wheel assembly wasn't put back on properly, came loose and took out the spokes.

Eric Hall A clue here is the rear mud guard is broken off. Often times when something catches the rear mud guard like a big rock or wire or other road debris, it gets caught up in the wheel and that's what breaks the spokes.

Tom Cutter Check spoke tension is part of EVERY Service check sheet for the GS and ADV models. I keep replacement spokes and nipples in stock because I fond so many loose or broken. People think that GSs are dirt bikes and that you can jump them, ride fast fire roads and rumble over boulders and never have to check the bike over. I am sometimes amazed by the poor condition that I see these bikes in, and the way they are ridden.

Jason Adams where are all the spokes, anyway? Just this weekend, a guy I was riding with had one of hte brake pins come out, and oddly enough this model bike had the pins exit towards the spokes. It got halfway out and clipped one spoke, bending it, and then PING flew out someplace. Maybe the caliper bolts or some other thing sheared them all, but that would slow the bike Very Quickly, and it would still be hard to wipe away ALL the spokes.

Pace Bonner Look at the wheel and hub for cracks or broken holes where the spokes attach.
I had a Harley Ultra Classic with spoked wheels. Spokes loosened under heavy acceleration. Once they started getting loose, the rear end would shake when off the throttle. Evidently the spokes would stretch when popping wheelies. Lol. I finally put mags on it. Problem solved.

Randy Owens GSA '07 has seen extreme duty(mine), so I know the spokes are tougher wheels than mags! No doubt. Anybody says otherwise, never rode dirt very far. This is a anomaly and needs investigated indeed, but don't dismiss spokes as the wheel of choice for offroad. Generally, the BMW spokes have proven very tough.

Jeffrey Lefebvre Go have a look at the current spoked wheel- and compare it to the ones offered in the past. Used to be moto art....These are....not.
Strange i'd have expected the nipples to still be in at least some of the rim holes if the spokes had snapped so perhaps it's a rim fault and the nipples pulled through?

Looks like there are a couple still attached to the hub and rim, but I wonder if the photo is not a bit staged for effect? I'm not sure how you'd stay upright on something like that as the guy claims

If the spokes collapsed suddenly, for whatever reason.......the brake disc would keep the wheel rim orientated on one side, and look at the shape of the outer surface of the wheel centre......effectively, it could have been like a pair of train wheels running inbetween two tracks
That would also eplain the damage to the inside surface of the rim, and what appears to be damage to the higher edges on either side of the hub itself........if that's how it happened, he was exceptionally lucky that the rim didn't come off the hub to the right, leaving him running on the edge of the brake disc until that shattered
