A high mileage 1150 limped in today. Gearbox all rattley and jumping out of the lower gears and no 6th. But still able to plough on to it's destination in 5th gear .

Took the box out and the input shaft was wobbling about with the input bearing hangin out.
Took it apart and i'm amazed it kept going, these 1150's have crude but tough old boxes.

Took the cover off, and 1st gear is toast

Oh, and these rolled out :D

Second gear is hanging on in there

Sixth did try.

Sorted through the "assorted gearbox parts" box and have almost all the replacement gears, here's the diference between the two types of input shaft constant speed gear.

And while i've got the gearbox bits out here's an input shaft with good splines and a worn one. And that was enough for me today, i hate the smell of burnt gear oil.

Any idea as to what caused the damage Steppers, the first step in the destructive chain so to speak?

Thanks for an interesting & informative post. When you say high mileage, what do you class as high?

To be honest i found this post hugely reassuring. not that i needed reassuring.

however.

ignore the damage which is due to a catastrophoc failure.. and a rare one at that.

The undamaged cogs are in amazingly good condition given the mileage. crude they may be - but "tough" is right on the button. :thumb2

Ouch :eek
That's a bit of a mess!
Looks like the gears tried to eat those loose balls.
