You guy might want to check

Exactly what people said about the failure of the r1200gsa lc wheels ... except it was proved beyond doubt that a loose caliper was not damaging the wheel it was the failure of the wheel ripping off the calipers when they collapsed (hence the tens of thousands wheels replaced by BMW in the worldwide recall)

Only quoting what's in the comments and the video.

considering the calliper is mounted on top of the swingarm - i'd be interested to see how it gets ripped off by the spokes failing.

As the spokes fail and the rear end of the bike collapses, the brake disc will break the calliper IMHO

It has always been the case with any spoked wheels that they should be regularly checked for loose spokes by tapping them.
If too many get slack the wheel looses it's strength & can collapse.

But on the photo I would agree that it looks like the brake caliper came off & into the wheel. Hard to imagine how the wheel could have collapsed and taken the brake caliper off.

Given the rate that some 1300s have been going through rear pads, it's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that the caliper has been off and incorrectly torqued...

I thought the caliper didn't need to be removed to change the pads ?

I think I was half asleep when I wrote that as the disc will remain on the hub….

The rim could have knocked the calliper off though as the wheel collapsed.

History repeating itself again
First saw it on M5 Almondsbury spectacular GSA wheel collapse all filmed on YouTube for the world to see, many years ago .
BMW never admitted any liability but there were a huge number of wheels , with loose spokes , replaced f.o.c thereafter
Very little clearance with our calipers and the spokes after 2013 change to shaft on the left; no room for any flexing otherwise complete destruction!
Wheels also changed from Behr ( Germany ) to GLM ( China ) , perhaps 2013 ish .
Note GLM are possibly the World’s largest manufacturer of extruded aluminium and are very experienced in wheel building .
Everyone check your spoke tensions with the simple ‘ting ting ting’ test.

Ting Ting testing well discussed on here yrs ago and seems to have disappeared from search

Best give it the..I Ching test 😂

BMW , i think no longer build a quality product , just an expensive one.
do they not look back at problems , to see what/when/where it went wrong ?
it has to be down to cost cutting ( a step too far ) by the bean counters .

Really don’t know why everyone’s hating on BMW, specifically Motorrad so much?!
I agree their stuff isn’t as good as it was in the 90’s and early 2000’s, but it’s still made at their factory in Berlin………and pretty good.
Yeah, the 1300 is overpriced and certainly doesn’t appeal to me (or many others), but it makes their 1250 Adventure much more attractive and you can still buy them brand new for under £20k if you think just a little outside the box.
PS. I go round my bike and check Torx fasteners and spokes every few rides. This is basic maintenance for something travelling 100mph+ with your ass on it. I actually get annoyed with the amount of blue loctite BMW uses, but that’s just me! 😬

There was an article on the Guzzi forums about a V85TT that suffered a wheel collapse up north in Canada. Luckily the guy was able to call for help before the bears ate him or he got hypothermia overnight, he was pretty smashed up. Bike was a write off.

Think I prefer alloys

Didn't realise Berlin is in China

Wasn’t chatting the wheels, I was talking about the bike assembly which is still in Berlin.
I do agree with “Grinning”, there’s bugger all clearance between the spokes and the caliper. If they do get loose, I’ll be taking straight back Motorrad for replacement.
