anyone done Zagora to Erg Chebbi avoiding Mohammed, in one day ? how far is it ?
If you are thinking of travelling by road, then yes it's easy in a day.
Overland - I looked at it, the biggest problem for me was that it was well over my 250 mile range between petrol stops, and I was unsure of the surface(s).

I have done it the other way around , no problems , stayed in a Good hotel in Zagora that is on the start of the Piste to erg Chebbi the name is Hotel Sirocco

Zagora to Erfoud
Looking to do the same route in April, GS Adv and KTM 640, most info and threads talk about it being a two day crossing.
Certainly I was looking at mileage being 150 miles to 250 miles no more difficult to get exact as route will take its turns and local conditions may have an impact. There also appears to be access to fuel (Tissemoumine)on the crossing but I cannot confirm this. We will be lookign to monior fuel speed time on crossing with GPS and prepare to bug out(escape) north if need be.
Bleached bones in Desert ain't part of the trip.

There IS petrol available (from barrels) at Oum Jrane - in Jan 2007 at least. (I don't know about deisel)
These is a very basic and very scruffy auberge in the village but I couldn't recommend it. After being purposely ignored for 5-10 mins I left and found a room in a private house in Tissimoumime.
The son of the house wanted to build a hotel\auberge in Tissi but alas had no funds. A plot of land had even been allocated to him by the village council. He was desperate to get a job and told me how he had stowed away twice to Europe and been caught and deported.

I did the purple part of your route in January with Steve Attwood (activmoto). The bit leading up to the Tizi n'Tafilalt used to be quite hairy with a chock full of medicine ball-sized boulders but it's been cleared.

I haven't done the eastern end of the route but from comments elsewhere that seems to be the sandy part.

About 190 miles following this route, a day is possible on the KTM... take plenty of water.
Be warned the area shaded Blue around Ramlia is a dried up river bed and there are huge sections of fesh fesh which is like trying to ride in 18 inch deep talcum powder. If you're taking your 12ADV I would say unless you're an off road god give it a miss.
If you get to Ramlia ask for Youssed, Himmi or Mohammed the English teacher and tell them you are from UKGSer

Paul G - Do you recommend missing the middle section - is there an alternative for the GS ADV or are you suggesting the whole route is out for the ADV?
Once past the Qued Ziz/Qued Ed Daoura which is the Blue area around Ramlia the piste is ok and certainly doable.
If time is not a problem go for it but expect a few off's and be prepared to spend two hours just crossing Qued Ed Daoura which is only 8km.

Bikes will be partially loaded, at least 12 GSA will be.
4 to 6 litres per day with Bivi ?
Your thoughts would be appreciated , as currently I was working on 8 Litres carried for the crossing? (1.5 to 2 days) jump off from Zagora at about mid day with half way Bivi .

First week of April will be similar to a hot British summer. 4 to 6 liters a day will be fine.
About half way along the piste you will find a small place that might be a good place stop and grab some water if you're running short or a mint tea or coke

Seen the pictures didn't want to sound too much like snob but grading is different out there.

I'll be there sometime mid April on the DRZ Adv. I'm intending to get some practice dune riding.

It is indeed a bit of a struggle around Ramlia but I managed to do it with a 1150 GSA last year. I was happy to have fitted a ceramic clutch because I don't think the standard clutch would survive the stretch of fes fes. I took the southern route via Tagounite and I don't think it is feasible in 1 day with a big bike unless you ride non stop.
Look here for the route and waypoint for an excellent sleep along the route. Highly recommended!
