Zumo 660 first impressions

Sorted thanks to Garmin Support

Spoke to Garmin support this morning who sent me a link to manually download the update. Saved the file to my pc and ran the update from there. Works like a charm...

From that point I was able to register the unit, and hey presto unlock the Maps and get access to an update to V10 mapping. I'll get onto that later.

In the meantime I've been out and tested the unit which is excellent. The only remaining fly in the ointment is that the 3.5mm audio connector on the power/audio cable (which I've already fitted to the bike) is faulty which I am going to replace myself in situ.

The URL is here if anyone has the same problems. After running the software, disconnect the cable, put the battery case back on and you will see the unit update itself at last.

If it screws up your unit then don't blame it on I...

Just to be clear, this is the GPS softwarefirmware update, not the map update

EDIT: I'm wrong - this appears to interact with the previously downloaded 2010 map file (the 4Gb one) and is currently working on transferring maps etc to my 660.

I re-installed v2.80 before this exercise, and it does now seem to be updating to the latest (2010) maps.

I'll post again when done. It's taking some time, which is a good sign.

I think...

Thanks to Problem0, the manual download and installation of 2010 maps worked a treat! :thumb

It takes forever for the software to build the map base and transfer to the 660, but it does work.

Feel slightly better now, but why all the complications? They really do need to engage some proper UAT.

Now my wrath is focessed on the lack of a repeat function for the voice prompts/commands. i.e. if you can't quite hear an instruction, all other GPS' on the planet allow you to repeat it.

Happier, but still a grumpy fcuker.

Memory for the Z660

Wasn't sure from the specs, but I have found that the unit will take SDHC cards as well as SD cards.
Thats very good news for adding music etc.

zumo660

Keep the question going about 'How to repeat the last verbal instruction' on the zumo 660..? I would like to know too..especially as I still haven't mounted it on my bars and it's very muffled nestled in my pocket amongst my sandwiches and AtoZ !!

Now why would they drop this function? Does it do a much better job of announcing navigation prompts than previous units??

Who knows - schoolboy error if you ask me. Maybe they can address it with a software/firmware upgrade???

I don't think it is any better (apart from the lane assist function), but if you're linked to an Autocom, or Scala, or sat in a car, it's difficult to miss hearing the instruction.

That said, I often make/receive phone calls while riding, and have missed turns with previous Garmins, because the instruction was muted. The repeat function was a Godsend.

I think it's a very poor oversight, personally.

Mine is a 660 aswell

Interesting...I've tried it countless times, and spoken to Garmin support in the UK and the US, who told me it doesn't exist. Touching the top left corner just brings up the written directions - it doesn't repeat any voice instructions.

Can you tell me what software version you have installed?

Thanks

EDIT: what mode do you have it in? Motorcycle, Car????

Actually - exactly where are you touching the screen? Anywhere I touch it in the top portion, just brings up the Directions in list format.

In motorcycle mode, whilst riding top left corner shows distance to next turn

If I touch it the audible command happens and the right side of the screen shows the turn in detail whilst the left stays as map

I'm on the latest software from the Garmin site - is it 2.8, I'm not sure but I loaded it on last week?

How can Garmin UK and US both tell you it doesn't feckin exist when I have it on mine?

That's an eye-opener!

Well, I'm buggered.:nenau

Bloody useless Garmin Tech support, and it cost me a bloody international call!!!:mad::mad:

Thank you very much for that. :bow I can rest easy, now!

It is such a useful feature, I spent ages fretting over why they should have dropped it.

Gits.

Thanks again! :JB

Hi Joybringer..I've just found that if you change the language to 'british english' instead of American English it gives you the repeat function...!!! I'm not joking..

Hmmm cancel that ..worked a couple of times then stopped !!! must have been coincidence, sorry. But definately has the function..just seems to be intermittent.

Yep mine repeats the voice command if I press the top left turn icon as well as showing me detailed picture of the turn.:thumb2

Heres a screenshot of the software mines running, after running webupdater I checked for furthur updates and selected all the British voices plus the top one, think it was GPS chipset. Everytime I touch the turn icon it gives me verbal as well:D
