Zumo 660 - new map 2013.1

Folks save yourself hours of headaches. After trying to fit an elephant into a bedsit I gave up, conceded defeat and called Garmin tech support.

The new map 2013.1 just released for all of Europe will not fit on the internal memory of your Garmin. The Western Europe map option #2 will fit on your Garmin. To update goto the Garmin website (mygarmin) log in with you account and select map update. For the Mac, Garmin Lifetime Mapupdater is crap. If you need more maps than the unit can hold then buy a SD card and use Mapinstaller to upload additional maps onto the device. Downloading the entire map to your computer will save you the headache of logging on to the website.

600MB Free.

And in

/Users/ian/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/City Navigator Europe NT 2013.10.gmap 3.27GB

So if I need the database of Lithuanian Pizza I can just squirt them onto the SD card:-

/Volumes/EXTERNAL/Garmin/gmapsupp.img Currently, Open Source Florida.

7.8GB Free.

So in a post 2 minutes ago, I raised an eyebrow at their testing and what it copies back on connection to Basecamp, but the auto updater seems to have a bit of a clue.

It'd be good if they detected it and asked if you wanted the whole lot moving to the SD card (perhaps leaving the 3D in internal storage), but with all the shonky ebay cards about, it'd give them a support headache.

It's not pretty but it works. I've already got Western Europe on the main card. In any case if you have the main map loaded on the computer you can push parts of Europe you need relatively quickly to the SD card.

did you need to delete any files on the unit manually, or did the update process handle it all?

I deleted all the voice files I didn't need from my Zumo550 a while ago.

I couldn't get ALL of Europe (which I wasn't happy about) on my unit at the last update (before this) so settled for western europe only.

Now I find that even that won't fit on the unit and I don't really want to use a card as I like using that for music.


I am not happy with Garmin and won't ever buy another unit from them, what is the use of a hard drive so small it won't accept reasonable updates???.......or am I missing something?

Nope, I deleted the supp img file last time, so only had lifetime file and base one before updating.

I've learnt to ignore the updates for Garmin.

If the unit as it stands links with your computer and you can programme in routes and waypoints, STOP at that point! Do not pass GO, do not collect £200. Be happy and leave the thing alone! The less a GPS has contact with the internet the better as far as I am concerned.

You may miss out on the odd new Spanish road (we stopped building new roads in UK years ago) but the thing will work!

Are you running a Zumo 550 or 660, the 550 doesn't have sufficient space for the current version of Western Europe. The 660 lacks enough room for the whole of Europe.

If you have a 660 then you need to install Western Europe via the on-line updater. Doing this from Mapsource or MapInstall will introduce a few issues: It won't install the Junction View and 3D buildings files. Additionally it will create a supplementary mapping file rather than a primary mapping file, the former will be written alongside the latter and there will be precious little space available.

The on-line installer will overwrite the existing primary mapping file and install the Junction View and 3D buildings file.

If you're used to working with older Garmin models such as SP2610 then you may naturally assume that installing mapping from Mapsource is the correct approach. This is not correct for updating the primary mapping, you need to use the on-line updater.

As above, if installing to a 660, use the on-line updater and select Western Europe as the region to install as well as installing full Europe to your PC. You can then use Mapsource or MapInstall to write any other areas of Europe you require to either the remaining space along side the primary mapping, if your needs are modest, (I tend to leave 100MB free) and/or the SD card if you need more data than will fit into the remaining internal memory.

If you are installing to a 550 then you are now in a position where it's best to install to PC only and then use Mapsource or MapInstall (the latter usefully reports free space and how much will remain) to write a supplementary mapping file to the internal memory with the mapping tiles you need and will fit. Once you have done this you can rename the mapping file from GMAPSUPP.IMG (primary mapping file) to GMAPPROM.IMG (supplementary mapping file). This isn't absolutely necessary but will prevent accidental overwriting.

The issue of the Junction View and 3D buildings file are not relevant on the 550 as it doesn't make use of them.

I tend to set it up and once it states that it's started and will take x hours I go and watch TV, sleep etc.

What I meant by that was this will happen on your GPS, both old and new mapping will be on your PC. The old mapping can be removed from there by the usual methods.

I wonder how long it'll be before we're downloading all the maps to the GPS using the 2610 way

And another thing, why can't I select more than one region to down load at any one time? I'm off to Croatia in September so have to download the Western Europe block to the GPS and Croatia and Slovenia to the PC (by downloading the whole lot) and then transfer it to the 660. Pity I'm not going down through Italy and across on the boat to Greece

Most 'older' users of Garmin use Mapsource which is an option you might consider. Mapsource uses individual files in much the same way you might expect with a word processing package.

BaseCamp on the other hand is more like iTunes with a monolithic library of all the waypoints, routes and tracks you ever reference. You then set up 'playlists' to cut down this monolithic collection and view just the bits you are interested in.

I am trying to be positive about moving to BaseCamp but for most people Mapsource might be an easier learning curve, plus there are excellent tutorials on this site.
