Hi folks,

Apologies if this is glaringly obvious and I've missed it in one of the threads somewhere BUT..... having installed mapsource from the Garmin site, there is no map in it! Do you have to buy maps?!? The unit came with City Navigator Europe NT 2012 but just appears to contain map updates(?).

I've also installed Basecamp for the Garmin site which loads up with a map.

At this point in time, I'm very confused. I only got it yesterday, so please bare with me!

Cheers!! :beerjug:

Can't remember the exact procedure but you have to register the unit on the garmin website and also unlock the map that came with it using the code on the map CD.

Someone will be along soon with exact instructions I imagine but this might just get you there.

You should have received a CD rom for Mapsource, instructions are on CD rom when you load it, you can unlock the maps on line or in mapsource using the unlock code (normally on a yellow slip of paper that came with the unit)
If you have installed mapsource included is a user manual, page 2 shows how to unlock the maps.

There was no Mapsource CD with the unit, hence I've downloaded it from the Garmin site. I've registered & updated the maps on the 660.

Does Mapsource use maps from the 660 or are they loaded separately from a downloaded map? Is this what you have to unlock?:confused:

The CD rom in my case is called City Navigator Europe NT you should have got one matey with the unit , this has all the maps, user manual etc on it , if you PM me I can email you a PDF user manual which shows how to unlock maps, for quickness try this
open mapsource
click on utilities>manage map products, select the unlock regions tab and click ADD
enter your 25 character unlock code and click ok.

Doesnt use the maps on the zumo, the maps are seperate, normally on CD which you install, if you were downloading them and Im sure you can it would take a good hour or two.

The maps used by the 660 and the PC need to be the same revision number otherwise all sorts of problems occur. What revision status are the maps? To find out, switch it on, select "tools" "settings" "map" and then "map info".

I don't know if you can take the maps off the 660 and use them on the PC, AFAIK you can do it the other way. A possible solution is to update the maps using the myGarmin account, just make sure to select download to PC & GPS.

Mine has CN Europe NT 2012.30 3D and CN Europe NT 2012.30

I'll guess you bought it second hand? If so you need to register it with Garmin here: https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/logi...min.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces

John Im not sure its that vital the maps are the same, when you transfer any routes etc from mapsource to the unit , the zumo will detect the maps are older and ask you if you want to update the routes etc .
Ive got a lifetime update subscription for the maps on the unit but if I wanted to update the mapsource maps I think id need to pay for a new CD rom ? at least this is my understanding but correct me please if im wrong.
Cheers

You're wrong......:thumb When you download a new map update, check the box which says to save them to your computer as well as your GPS unit. Creating a route in Mapsource on a mapset which isn't the same version as the one in your GPS unit can throw up some strange effects.

cheers mate just sussed out now how to do that , when I checked the box for device and PC it brought up a suggested location which i think was program files/garmin/maps I just accepted that , should I have changed it do you think ?? to target mapsource or will that do ??

I'd leave it at the suggested location.

No, it's new but there was no Mapsource disc. I got the city Navigator disc but when I run this all it appears to do is try to update the maps on the Zumo!?!

Then it's probably the "free" update, which if you ask for PC and 660 will put the up-to-date maps on both. What maps do you have on your 660?

Re different versions of Mapsource

I have around 35 day routes that I give to guests to enhance their stay. There is obviously no way that I can prepare these routes in exactly the same version as that used by each guest. I still use a 2610 and use the 2009 mapping, that being the last available update for my device. I also have 2012 mapping with all routes on this as well. All the Garmins appear to recognise when a route has be prepared with a different map and recalculate the route accordingly. I have made sure that there are enough waypoints to force the units to use the roads I want but apart from that-and the need to check that the preferences are set correctly- people report that the routes work fine. I guess there could be problems if there are major changes to a road but around here and on the sort of roads you would want to ride there is little change.

The only real problems I have encountered stem from people not knowing how to use their own unit. Bit of a stereotype but, judging from our guests, the Germans read the manual and the Brits don't. Hence the need to check preferences, I am constantly amazed by the number of people who have "avoid toll roads" ticked, this in an area where a lot of the best roads are privately owned (Grossglockner,Nockalmstrasse etc) and we give them a free pass so there is no tolls to pay. And almost without exception 660 owners have the "Avoid seasonal closures" ticked too. I suspect this might be a default setting but I always check now. It's better than dealing with the "Bloody thing would not take me over the Grossglockner" rant. Obviously the "bloody thing" is just doing what it is told and trying it's best to avoid a seasonally closed road.

John

Sorted... I think!?
