My 6 year old unit has stopped charging from the mount. I've changed the mount and tried it on other mounts and its definitely the unit.

Phoned Garmin for assistance and got the helpful response that the unit is no longer supported so tough shit

I am not sure why Garmin (or any manufacturer) should support items far beyond their guarantee period. The 660 was replaced in the company's GPS range with a whole new operating system and series of devices some time ago.

There are plenty of repair agents out there.

http://satnavrepairservice.com/repair-satnav/garmin-repair/garmin-zumo-660-repair/816.html or someone similar might hold the answer, I guess.

Google: 'Garmin 660 repairs' or something along those lines.

Seems shit to me considering that you can still buy these brand new from retailers....

No doubt and no doubt Garmin would honour the manufacturer's / statutory warranty should you buy one, plus any goodwill you might be able to generate in addition. Avoiding the word 'shite' when appealing would be good, should you ever do so.

The OP's device is six years old.

Battery maybe?

Battery maybe?

It charges from the USB so the battery would appear to be OK.

It's weird as it has worked no problem for the last 3 years housed in a K1600 mounting. On some recent test rides I noticed it wasn't charging on another BMW bike but didn't explore much further.

Frustrating as it otherwise works great and has been updated with software/maps no problems.

I wasn't expecting Garmin to give me a new one :augie but hoped there would be a solution or maybe an offer. C'est la vie.

Thought it was worth posting for awareness.

Tried cleaning the contacts on the device?

Yes :(

Touring mates have Zumo's so I'm stuck with Garmin for route sharing.

Can't see myself going to £400 for a 590. A refurbed 660LM is £250 from Handtec.

What about the 390LM.

Yeah and.....? 6 years old? Wow. So is mine. Some of us can't afford the latest bikes or phones or sat navs! Shelling out £400-£500 on a new one can be the difference of being able to afford a family summer holiday or not! I too need my 660 mending ( scratched screen) so Garmin not supporting this model anymore can be a bit of an arse to those of us who can't afford new every couple of years. Would BMW, Volvo or Mercedes for example stop supporting cars that are 6 years old. I don't think so.

There is a legal requirement for manufacturers to support vehicles. 10 years I think.

There are many strikingly obvious differences between a car and a GPS device, just as there is between a car and say, a washing machine. Nobody has suggested that Garmin or their agents does not have parts for 660's available, all that Garmin has said is that they (the manufacturer) will not invite the device in to look at or repair themselves anymore.

The 660 was launched in 2009 as a replacement for the 550, launched in 2006. Garmin no longer support the 550; they no longer actively support the 660 it seems. The OP tells us that the 660 is six years old, which would put it in the very first batches issued. Its on-bike charging capabilities have failed after six years, why nobody knows. Are there alternative repair agents available? Apparently, yes. Will they be able to repair the fault? Who knows. Will the repair agent use genuine Garmin parts or generic 'same as' parts? Who knows? Will it work? Who knows.

If the OP fails to persuade Garmin to repair the six year old - long out of warranty - device and / or cannot persuade them to offer him a replacement at say a discount, then he has two short term choices:

1. To offer the device to a repair agent for an opinion and possible repair

2. Seek to repair it himself

This somewhat garbled thread suggests that the device might be entering mass storage mode when powered by the bike: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/navigation-maps-compass-gps/zumo-660-charging-problems-66080 Feck only knows if they are right but give it a go, it's free to try.

As to the scratched screen? Generic replacement screens are available, along with video instructions as to how to make the replacement.

Here's an example, found in under 10 seconds of a search in Google instead of ranting:

Give it a go yourself (if you can be arsed) or post the device off to someone who will, parts plus labour.... A bit of an arse, but not too much, hopefully.

PS Nothing in your post #15 indicates whether you have already tried contacting Garmin about your scratched screen already; though it strongly suggests that you haven't been arsed to. Give it a go. Who knows, they might just say yes.

Yep, already contacted Garmin and in my post (in a separate thread with a couple of helpful replies) , they also told me they ain't interested in repairing it. Great. I'd rather have had them repair it and not butcher it myself. I just think its a bit wrong that they've made hundreds of thousands of these units (since 2009 as you state) up until quite recently and then just cut off any support for them. I could understand if it was the 550 but not the 660.

Garmin made thousands of the 550 (many bods preferred them to the 660 and they were for a while more expensive as a consequence) and before that thousands of the Quest / the others that came before the 550. These are no longer actively supported, either. Longevity of product ranges and on-going support (well outside of warranty) is not something the consumer / electronics trade is known for.

There really is no need to butcher, as you put it, your 660; the video shows how - by being just reasonably careful - anyone can do it. Failing that, post it off to one of the many repair agents and pay a bit to get it fixed. Garmin wouldn't be doing it for nothing. Then carefully fit a scratch resistant film to the screen and you'll be good to go. How did you manage to scratch the screen? I have used Garmin products since the Quest, over 1000's of miles, with no significant scratching of the screen.

PS I have now found your other thread. You seem confident that you can do it without butchering, even
a clumsy muppet
like you. Assuming you haven't lost your nerve over the last couple of days, are halfway there.

Still curious as to how you got your screen
well scratched
?
