i have been having problems downloading latest map update to my zumo 660.

i was on CN Europe NT 2012.20. i have lifetime update, and so i used the updater tool set to install maps on my mac + gps.
downloaded the maps ok, but it said i didn't have enough room for the maps on my zumo. i allowed it to create room, which it did. it got most of the way through the install, when the process stopped, and i found the zumo was frozen. i took the battery out and rebooted.
the zumo appeared to have 2012.30 on it, but no sign of it on Basecamp. i repeated the process with the same result.

a bit of research on ZumoForums suggested a manual install, so i tried that. again, the zumo froze at some point and i had to remove the battery to reboot (is there another way?).

i now have 2012.30 and 2012.30 3D listed in the zumo map info and 2012.30 listed in map info in basecamp. last night i had a 3D option in the basecamp sidebar which brought a relief effect to the map, but that op[tion has disappeared this morning.

do you think all the map info is installed correctly bearing in mind that the install routine never finished and the zumo crashed? how can i tell?

if i do it again, how should i go about it?

Im not sure if this will help but I uninstalled the lifetime updater then went to garmin uk my dashboard and reinstalled it, although the lifetime updater told me I was up to date I still clicked on search for updates and made sure in settings first that under installation I took the option for PC and device, after clicking on search for updates it gave me an option to re install which I took, to be honest it said downloading but never made any progress for an hour , I took option then to stop the download then clicked on an option it brought up to download now , no issues after that whole download and reinstall process took 2hrs and afterwards device and pc were both showing 2012.30 maps.
sorry this is a bit longwinded but might be worth a try.

Hi Cookie,
bing a fellow Garmin 660 and Mac user, I hate Garmin software , as you know ! The new Garmin Lifetime Updater software worked fine for me, but the software window of the Updater gives no estimate of download times, nor any indication of progress etc. Do Garmin never actually look at how their software runs -and how it should run on Macs ?
WhenI updated (2012.30 etc), I downloaded to my Mac first, and then downloaded to my Zumo -no idea how long it took, on Broadband, at reasonable speed, but a few hours - I just left it to get on with it overnight, and came back in the morning.

Is it possible that what you are seeing as a "frozen Zumo" is in fact NOT frozen, but still downloading or verifying or whatever Garmins do ? Leave it to download overnight and see if that helps .
Also, Garmin's on-screen instructions to "disconnect your Device, and allow to re-start" seems not always to be necessary with a MAc, as sometimes , when the whole download process has finished and it tells you to disconnect/re-start etc., if I leave it for a few moments, the Zumo restarts without my having to disconnect/eject etc.

To me, these are all typical Garmin shortcomings, and typical of their complete failure to check and use their own software, or to listen to users' problems. (Don't even mention the Road Trip disaster !). They also have little appreciation of Macs, and seem incapable of learning why Apple has been so sucessful. Software should be both simple to use, and should provide idiot proof feedback and instuctions. However, I won't go on !!!!

Might be an idea to do a total safety back-up to your Mac ( ie just drag Garmin and SD Crd folders to your Mac hard-drive), and start again from scratch. If it all goes tits-up, at least you can revert to the back-up.
Bloody Garmin - every update is a nightmare, which usually cures one problem and creates 3 more problems.
Good luck, and if I never see you again, I can assume you followed your Garmin into some Garmin GPS black hole somewhere in another dimension- Planet Garmin.
Good Luck.....

i had left it all day. then i left it all night.

both times, the zumo had definitely frozen, the mac had detected as much and spouted the warning about ejecting discs/volumes properly.

i wonder if someone could verify the file size of 2012.30 for me? in basecamp, click on Maps in the menu bar then Installed Map Info...

highlight 2012.30 and click Reveal in Finder. right click on the file and left click Info. mine is 4,06GB. i just want to see if i have the whole download, or if some is corrupted/missing?

My file size for the 2012.30 download is 3.03GB.

I downloaded it to both Zumo and iMac. I had to first upload the Garmin automatic download file. Previously I have used Parallels and Mapsource but this time I wanted to try out the new Basecamp.

Looking in the folder I have 3 files:

41322E7B-4CD0-4B05-B35C-D75FC17BD9E6.gma
City Navigator Europe NT 2012.30.gmap
UnlockCodes.ucx

They are stored in library/application support/garmin/maps/

With the Zumo I had to do the usual of unplugging, putting the back on, letting it reboot, turn off, reattach to iMac and press done.

I also did the software update.

In Zumo map info I have 2012.30 and 2012.30 3D - both of which I have ticked.

Hope this helps :nenau

Hi Cookie,
I get 3.03 Gig as well for 2012.30.
Why would yours show 4.6 Gig I wonder - did you download something extra ?
I think there was a firmware update as well on Garmin site, but in Dashboard I was informed that my Zumo software needed updating, which I did as well.
So, do you have latest software on your Zumo ?

That's a bit weird.

I did the unit firmware update first, which went fine. Might be I need to speak to garmin or post this issue on the sumo forums.

Roger: Dashboard. Is that part of My Garmin?

Thanks all for the help by the way :)

Same for me, 3.03gb, but no 3d on my mac. The unit shows the whole of the .30 3d and just western Europe for 2d, which I did need to trim to fit. If I'd had the option it would be better to have just the full 2d...

Roger: Dashboard. Is that part of My Garmin?

:)

Go to the garmin site then you can login and see what updates your satnav needs...it will pair your satnav to their register... should be afew clicks to get it to do what you want. The login section is called dashboard.

Well I did have 3d, I turned it on and saw the relief mapping, but the option has vanished now without me doing anything to the program.

I'm wondering if my zumo crashed by trying to install too big mapping files?

I did use dashboard, I just never noticed what it was called.

Just a thought...

Have you already updated the system sw? - They posted a release after I put the new maps on. It's not some sort of Package that you have now that contains the maps and the latest software? - If you do a show package contents on your .gdb files is there anything else in there that might account for the extra gig?

I'll update my unit tonight and try and re-download just the 2d full europe to see if it fits on.

New version from Dec 13th: http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=14675.0

it was updated with the latest unit software 2 days ago.

i'll try and look into the files later :)

I tried map update program just now, and it's pulling down a 4.2GB file. So back to just installing western europe again via the lifetime updater. Hopefully it'll just install the 2d/3d subset of the whole thing. Shouldn't be too long to do this.

I guess the two maps are tied, and some of the data isn't duplicated, but it's a shame you can't pick one.

....

My update failed. Not enough space.

So I re ran map installer on my 3.03GB and selected everything. It's shipping over now. Lets see what I end up with. I only have 1 file, still from dec 1.

macmini:Maps ian$ ls -al

The other option is to re-run the Map Updater (option2) overnight and see what it pulls for my subscription, and then split those installs onto main memory and the SD card. That's where you were going when things hung?

I bet there's some hidden switch to turn on logging / options etc...

I had the same problem loading the new updates via my PC (not a mac) onto a NavIV (same as a 660).... Not enough space on the device :roll

I think this is because the update now brings in more detailed mapping right down the eastern Adriatic coast and Turkey..... so the map updates are now larger than Garmin's own devices will take :blast Which genius dreamt this up I cannot imagine.

I got up a pop-up message on the NavIV asking if I would only like to load 'west', along with a shaded outline of most of western Europe. Good enough for me, for now.

I will though go into the Nav IV and clear out any files that I don't need; language help files and voice in Hebrew or Swahili for instance. This might create enough space.... we shall see. It's an old 550 trick, so it may work :nenau

I also had to have two goes at downloading and installing the updates, via Lifetime updater. The first simply crashed or stopped.

ok, so maybe the 4.2GB on my mac is ok, but it looks like my zumo install crashed out due to lack of space as i suspected. i had a message on first attempt, it cleared space automatically and said there was enough. must have been mistaken

as i don't know what's on the unit and what's not, maybe i need to remove it and use map install to replace selectively? can that be done?

or just wait for the next update, and do the upgrade in way zumo forums recommend: install to computer only, then Mapinstall to the unit.

I just got up and it's all done.

The map update program has managed to fit it all on after getting rid of the supplemental map file (2+gb) and a bunch of crap like afrikans voices...

Nice.... and there's a single 4.06GB .gmap bundle in my library/appsupport/garmin/maps folder, and the following on the unit:-

-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 448749568 4 Jan 23:46 gmap3d.img
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 4 21 Aug 1999 gmap3d.sum
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 51019776 30 Apr 2010 gmapbmap.img
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 4 21 Aug 1999 gmapbmap.sum
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 2494103552 5 Jan 01:18 gmapprom.img
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 608256 4 Jan 23:33 gmaptz.img
-rwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian 4 21 Aug 1999 gmaptz.sum

So about 3GB of mapping for the overnight update.

No supplemental file this time, so I suspect they changed something in the way it got shipped across and the 2+gb supp file wasn't getting cleaned up on the install properly and causing the space issue.

Obviously I've not had time to visit Slovenia yet to see if it's working properly.

One day... when I can fit it in amongst all the other idiot abroad trips for work.
