zumo 660 update problems

No supplemental file this time, so I suspect they changed something in the way it got shipped across and the 2+gb supp file wasn't getting cleaned up on the install properly and causing the space issue.

The 'gmapsupp.img' file is created by using the 'send to device' command in Mapsource or using the MapInstall program. I'm pretty confident that the update process doesn't add, delete or overwrite this file.

'gmapsupp.img' is intended for additional mapping that a user may want to add to the device such as for another region, say for a tour in the USA, or to add TOPO or BlueChart mapping data.

Each time you use Mapsource or MapInstall to send mapping to your GPS it overwrites the old 'gmapsupp.img' file with a new one.

Obviously I've not had time to visit Slovenia yet to see if it's working properly.

Put it in simulation mode and you can do that without leaving the house.

Updated 'Doris' to 2012.30 last night and she's now happily driving between two cities in the Ukraine.

Yep, you just need to be aware of any self installed mapping data and that if it's large it could interfere with updates due to available space on the system to accommodate updates to the primary mapping which expands in size with each iteration.

If Mapsource or MapInstall were used to install a previous mapping update then this will be redundant anyway and can be deleted. Applying primary map updates in this way went out with the Quest and StreetPilot 2610. Unfortunately some misguided old hands still use this method.

Within this there will be a folder called 'garmin'. Delete this, after copying to your PC hard drive if you wish to err on the side of caution. i just checked, and that file does not exist on my unit. i guess that the auto space making routine on mapupdate zapped it.

Either that, which is unlikely TBH as Garmin could get into deep water if they Deleted other mapping. Or more likely; you haven't used send to device with mapping tiles selected in Mapsource (I understand that you run a Mac anyway) or done similar with MapInstall (for which, I believe, there is a Mac version).

In it's virgin state Garmins won't have a 'gmapsupp.img' file, only if you load supplementary mapping as described above. Primary mapping updates, done the Garmin approved way, will just overwrite the 'gmapprom.img' file.

i spoke to garmin tech support this morning. guy thought as long as the relevant boxes were ticked in the map info on the unit, all would be well.

no explanation forthcoming for why my unit freezes during/after install.

no plausible ones anyway.

What size are the following files, in the 'garmin' folder, on your GPS?

Mine are 2,435,648KB and 438,323KB respectively. This is for last nights update to 2012.30

If your figures tally then I would assume that all is well.

Same as I posted above Cookie... Just the difference between a thousand kb on windows and a 1024 KB on the mac.

i have just noticed something as i came back to my mac now. it was in sleep mode and the garmin i'd left plugged in while checking file sizes had been improperly ejected again.

i tried sleeping the mac again with the same result. that shouldn't happen. doesn't happen with any other external discs

looks rather like the cause of the issue anyway

next update i'll reset the power save settings not to sleep.

Have you tried using a bigger sd card for some of the stuff your trying to load or old maps already on your zumo? just a thought, i hate doing any updates to my Nav IV on my mac. Garmin are so user unfriendly.

Deleted all the non-English voice and text files from the Nav IV / 660 and reinstalled the full latest mapset onto the device, no problem. Took about 45 minutes to reinstall.

Thought to myself "blimey, he must have a lot of extra stuff on there. There's 4GB on the 660". Just checked and I have 137MB of free space I deleted all the foreign voices on day one though admittedly I do have about 37MB of POI files on there.

I reckon in 2-4 updates the 660 will be out of room and we'll be needing to be selective as to which bits of Europe we have loaded

I was really surprised when the new 2012.30 mapset would not fit onto a new (six month old) Nav IV / 660.

I have very little tat / anything extra on the Nav IV and had assumed it would load straight on. Hence my surprise a week or so ago when a message flashed up during the installation process of the new maps onto the device telling me there was:'Insufficient space, would you like to load just the western bits?'. Stripping the speech and text files down solved the problem, just as it did on the 550.

I am now chancing my arm loading the 2012.30 maps onto my Mac too, having remembered to select 'Just the Mac' in Preferences. I am no Mac expert* but, Jesus, it's an unfriendly install wizard thing Garmin have created for Mac use. Anyway, it seems to be going on and I've followed cookie's tip about disabling the sleep functions


*Or PC / IT wizard either.... wholly reliant on judge in that department.

Well, for all my Mac and IT numptyness that seems to have gone remarkably badly......

I left the map download trundling along overnight. Come down to be greeted with the happy message that the update is complete... Jolly good! BUT now it all goes wrong..... Open Bootcamp and it's just the basemap, with no detail....

Now I enter a world of IT / Mac, which is always perilous.....

Guessing, I go into Launchpad and can see four icons:

Garmin Basecamp ...... click on that....just the basemap

Garmin Mapinstall ...... click on that.... 'No Garmin maps found, please ensure you have them installed and try again'

Gamin Map Manager ...... click on that.... 'No compatible maps were detected'

Garmin Lifetime Map Updater ...... click on that.... little message that 2012.03 is installed.... but I must attach the Nav IV again to continue the installation, so I attach the device .... Installation seems to be going on...... Map installed....


Back to Launchpad I go....

Garmin Basecamp ...... click on that....just the basemap

Gamin Map Manager ...... click on that.... 'No compatible maps were detected'...... I then notice a button 'Reveal in Launchpad'.... click on that.... three 'things' revealed.... click on each.... all seem to light up, unlock....unlocked.... hit install 2012.03.... trundle, trundle, trundle etc.... 2012.03 installed correctly.... SURELY THAT HAS DONE IT????

Go back to Launchpad.... click on Basecamp.... still just the base map.... For feck's sake.....!!!!

Go back to Launchpad.... go back to Gamin Map Manager ...... click on that.... 'No compatible maps were detected'...... Click on 'Reveal in Launchpad.'... nothing revealed.... OH FOR FECK'S SAKE.... where have they gone?

What is going on????? Everything tells me that the latest maps are installed.... why can't I see them in Bootcamp?????

Go back into Basecamp.... click on the dropdown maps button....No 2013.03 shown.... surely it should be....???? Everything told me it should be..... Think, what to do next.... I know, try My Garmin....

Reattach Nav IV....

Go to My Garmin.....

Find the GPS device....

Enter serial number...

Enter product code....

Unlock successful....

Go back to Basecamp..... Click on maps drop down button..... fingers crossed, pleeeeease be there, pretty please..... HOORAY... OH HAPPY DAY..... OH HAPPY DAY..... One set of detailed 2012.03 maps in all their glory.... What a palaver, but hey-ho I got there in the end! PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS AN EASIER WAY?????

Now to see if it works.....

I have never used Basecamp before but am quite good at Mapsource on a pc.... so now to see how it works.... I have imported some routes and can see them in the left hand bar.... yep, they open up, jolly good.... now to find out how to create routes and folders.... such fun!!!

IS THERE AN IDIOT'S GUIDE TO BOOTCAMP.....???? If not, I will just play about, as I probably can't break it...... FILE..... NEW LIST..... I guess??? ..... Let's see..... Well it does something..... Here we go...... Blimey this is weird....

Don't think I am... Basecamp seems to be it.... Aha, I see where, sorry that was dumb of me........ gawd knows why I typed Bootcamp, probably just similar words, with the wrong one popping into my head...

If someone could point me in the direction of a Basecamp tutorial I would be very happy..... I don't mind playing with it.... some of the features seem quite good....

Oh bloody hell, this is becoming ridiculous....I closed down Bascamp to make a cup of tea....

I come back, relaunch Basecamp and now the 2012.03 maps have vanished! No longer available as an option on the Maps dropdown button even.... How can something be installed, run, be used and then vanish? I can see the trial route folder I made and the route flags I created but the detailed 2012.03 map has gorn into thin air leaving me with just the basic base mapping.

Oh mummy, where has 2012.03 gorn and buggered orf to now?
