zumo 660 update problems

Not sure about that, but I had deleted the old mapping files from the Garmin 660 anyway, so there were no maps there before I reloaded everything.

OK, that'll work. Though, as said earlier, you'll have no Junction View and I'm not sure if the 3D building eye-candy will work as you'll have the version of that from the previous mapping. Neither of these are necessary for the mapping to work though.

I would be inclined to change the file name of your mapping from GMAPSUPP.IMG to GMPPROM.IMG if you haven't already done so. Especially if you us Mapsource as it's fairly easy to inadvertently overwrite your map-set if you don't.

If you load your mapping this way you can clear loads for room for future updates by deleting (back these up first though) the files in /Garmin/JCV/ and the GMAP3D.IMG file in /Garmin.

If memory serves me correctly, I had a problem a while back, regarding the new map install not over-writing the old maps.
What had happened was that , if you load new maps onto the computer first, and then copy this across to the Garmin, it creates a differently named file, and this , having a different name, is obviously not over-written.
I queried this with garmin, as I was seeing past maps in the window where you tick which maps you want to use ( or not), eg 3D Maps, etc.
They instructed me to remove the file called -"Garminmapsup.img", and that on downloading new maps directly to the Garmin Zumo, ( ie not dragging file from the Mac across), the new maps file would then be correctly loaded, and would appear as
"Garminmap.prom.img"
When I subsequently checked in the Map info window again, the earlier maps had disappeared, and only the latest map versions showed.
Worked for me with Mac and Zumo 660.
Hope this helps, but I do agree, it should never have to be this complex!

The trouble is that the size of the current mapping (City Nav Europe) now exceeds what can fit onto a Zumo 660 in it's standard configuration. This forces users to use unconventional methods to load the entire mapping data. Either that or load a sub-set of Europe in one of the offered configurations.

You sure about that? I followed the instructions to bin the supplemental file and it all goes on nicely now.

I'd made the mistake of using the MapInstall to build a map set in the past and ship it across, removing space that the full map requires.

i.e. just plug it in and update, no messing around making room by removing redundant files etc.

I spoke to someone at Garmin a few weeks back, apparently they are bringing out a revised map updater that gives the option to install mapping to an SD card. I might even be out already.
